New loci for body fat percentage reveal link between adiposity and cardiometabolic disease risk

چکیده
To increase our understanding of the genetic basis of adiposity and its links to cardiometabolic disease risk, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of body fat percentage (BF%) in up to 100,716 individuals. Twelve loci reached genome-wide significance (P<5 × 10(-8)), of which eight were previously associated with increased overall adiposity (BMI, BF%) and four (in or near COBLL1/GRB14, IGF2BP1, PLA2G6, CRTC1) were novel associations with BF%. Seven loci showed a larger effect on BF% than on BMI, suggestive of a primary association with adiposity, while five loci showed larger effects on BMI than on BF%, suggesting association with both fat and lean mass. In particular, the loci more strongly associated with BF% showed distinct cross-phenotype association signatures with a range of cardiometabolic traits revealing new insights in the link between adiposity and disease risk.

Does body adiposity index evaluate percentage of body fat?
Introduction: The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the novel marker, body adiposity index (BAI), is accurate to measure percentage of body fat (PBF). Materials and methods: Seventy-eight males were undergone anthropometric examination. PBF was calculated by BAI and measured using InBody 3.0. Results: Significant correlation was found between BAI and PBF (r = 0.751; P < ...
متن کاملThe relative contributions of the abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat depots to cardiometabolic risk in youth.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat, independent of total body fat, with cardiometabolic risk factors and insulin resistance among youth. Visceral and subcutaneous fat, percentage total body fat, insulin resistance (adjusted for lean body mass: Mlbm), blood pressure, glucose, insulin and lipids were obtained in 472 youth ages 6-18 yea...
متن کاملEvaluation of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis for Identifying Overweight Individuals at Increased Cardiometabolic Risk: A Cross-Sectional Study
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether bioelectrical impedance analysis could be used to identify overweight individuals at increased cardiometabolic risk, defined as the presence of metabolic syndrome and/or diabetes. DESIGN AND METHODS Cross-sectional study of a Scottish population including 1210 women and 788 men. The diagnostic performance of thresholds of percentage body fat measured by bioele...
متن کاملIs vulnerability to cardiometabolic disease in Indians mediated by abdominal adiposity or higher body adiposity
BACKGROUND Indians may be particularly vulnerable to cardiometabolic disease, potentially due to higher body fat for a given BMI, or a tendency towards depositing abdominal adiposity. The aim of the study is to assess whether different measures of the distribution of adiposity (abdominal versus whole body) or amount of adiposity (DXA versus traditional anthropometric) are better at predicting p...
متن کاملBioelectrical Impedance versus Body Mass Index for Predicting Body Composition Parameters in Sedentary Job Women
Objective: Nowadays the value of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in the estimation of body adiposity both on a clinical basis in the individual and epidemiologically in large populations is of great interest. The current study determine accuracy of BIA compared with body mass index (BMI) measurement for estimating body composition in a group of normal weight employee women with a sedenta...
