چکیده

We report the discovery of a radio loud quasar with a redshift of 4.30. This object, which is the rst radio selected quasar with a redshift greater than four, was discovered during an observational investigation into the evolution of the luminosity function of radio loud quasars. Here we describe results based on a sample of 300, at spectrum radio sources with S 5GHz >200mJy. In this study, rather than carry out an indiscriminate redshift campaign on all the radio sources, we have used the APM POSS catalogue to preselect a subset of stellar-like optical counterparts with red optical colours. Such a subsample is expected to contain a high fraction of high redshift quasars. 10 of the 300 sources were selected for follow-up optical spectroscopy and three of these are identiied as quasars with redshifts greater than 3.0. One of the radio sources, GB1508+5714, is a quasar with z=4.30 and m(R)19.

A survey for high-redshift radio-loud quasars: optical spectroscopy of S>0.2 Jy, flat-spectrum radio sources

We present optical spectroscopic data for a complete sample of 161 S5GHz ≥ 0.2Jy, flatspectrum radio sources. The sources were observed as part of a survey for high redshift, radio-loud quasars, and were selected for spectroscopic follow-up based on criteria of red optical colour and unresolved optical counterpart, as measured from APM scans of POSS-I plates. 13 objects from the spectroscopic s...

Discovery of radio-loud quasars with z=4.72 and z=4.01

We report the discovery of two radio-loud quasars with redshifts greater than four; GB1428+4217 with z = 4.72 and GB1713+2148 with z = 4.01. This doubles the number of published radio-selected quasars with z > 4, bringing the total to 4. GB1428+4217 is the third most distant quasar known and the highest redshift radio and X-ray source currently known. It has a radio flux density at 5GHz of 259±...

Decline of the space density of quasars between z = 2 and z = 4

We define a new complete sample of 13 optically-luminous radio quasars (MAB(1450Å)< −26. 9 and log P1.4GHz(WHz−1) > 25.7) with redshift 3.8 < z < 4.5, obtained by crosscorrelating the FIRST radio survey and the APM catalogue of POSS-I. We measure the space density to be (1.0 ± 0.3) Gpc−3, a factor 1.9±0.7 smaller than the space density of similar quasars at z ≈ 2 (FBQS). Using a new measurement...

Qso Environments at Intermediate Redshifts

We have made a survey of quasar environments at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.8, using a sample of both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars matched in B-band luminosity. Our observations include images of background control fields to provide a good determination of the field galaxy counts. About 10 per cent of the quasars appear to live in rich clusters, whereas approximately 45 per cent live in environments simi...

We have made radio observations of 87 optically selected quasars at 5 GHz with the VLA in order to measure the radio power for these objects and hence determine how the fraction of radio-loud quasars varies with redshift and optical luminosity. The sample has been selected from the recently completed Edinburgh Quasar Survey and covers a redshift range of 0.3 ≤ z ≤ 1.5 and an optical absolute ma...
