چکیده

We present a near-IR spectrum of the nearby radio galaxy PKS1549-79 (z = 0.153). These data were taken with the aim of testing the idea that this object contains a quasar nucleus that is moderately extinguished, despite evidence that its radio jet points close to our line-of-sight. We detect broad Paα emission (FWHM 1745 ± 40 km s), relatively bright continuum emission, and a continuum slope consistent with a reddened quasar spectrum (3.1 < AV < 7.3), all emitted by an unresolved point source. Therefore we conclude that we have, indeed, detected a hidden quasar nucleus in PKS1549-79. Combined with previous results, these observations are consistent with the idea that PKS1549-79 is a young radio source in which the cocoon of debris left over from the triggering events has not yet been swept aside by circumnuclear outflows.

Nuclear star formation in the quasar PG 1126 − 041 from adaptive optics assisted spectroscopy ⋆

We present adaptive optics assisted spectroscopy of three quasars obtained with NACO at VLT. The high angular resolution achieved with the adaptive optics (∼ 0.08), joined to the diagnostic power of near-IR spectroscopy, allow us to investigate the properties of the innermost 100 pc of these quasars. In the quasar with the best adaptive optics correction, PG1126−041, we spatially resolve the Pa...

SDSS J131339.98+515128.3: A new gravitationally lensed quasar selected based on near-infrared excess

We report the discovery of a new gravitationally lensed quasar, SDSS J131339.98+515128.3, at a redshift of 1.875 with an image separation of 1. 24. The lensing galaxy is clearly detected in visible-light follow-up observations. We also identify three absorption-line doublets in the spectra of the lensed quasar images, from which we measure the lens redshift to be 0.194. Like several other known...

The Optical/near-ir Colors of Broad Absorption Line Quasars, including the Candidate Radio-loud Bal Quasar J1556+3517

A candidate radio-loud broad absorption line quasar (RLBAL) has been reported by Becker et al. (1997). We present JHK observations of this object and three other radio-detected BALs taken with the new Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT/Ohio State/Aladdin IR Camera (MOSAIC) on the KPNO 4-meter. The candidate RLBAL J1556+3517 has B?K=6.63, redder than all but one or two known z>1 quasars. This strongly sugge...

Emission line outflows in PKS 1549 - 79 : the effects of the early stages of radio source evolution ?

We present new spectroscopic observations of the southern radio galaxy PKS154979 (z = 0.152). Despite the flat spectrum character of the radio emission from this source, our optical spectra show no sign of the broad permitted lines and non-stellar continuum characteristic of quasar nuclei and broad line radio galaxies. However, the high ionization forbidden lines, including [OIII]λλ5007,4959, a...

ISO Observations of the dusty quasar BR 1202 - 0725

We present midand far-IR photometry of the high-redshift (z=4.69) dusty quasar BR1202-0725. The quasar was detected in the near-IR, at a flux level (0.7±0.2 mJy) consistent with an average Radio-Quiet Quasar at it’s redshift. Only upper limits for the emission were obtained in the far-IR. These upper limits, when combined with data from ground-based telescopes, are the first direct evidence for...
