چکیده

In this paper, we solve a general problem of optimizing a portfolio in a futures markets framework, extending the previous work of Galluccio et al. [Physica A 259, 449 (1998)]. We allow for long buying/short selling of a relatively large number of assets, assuming a fixed level of margin requirement. Because of non-linearity in the constraint, we derive a multiple equilibrium solution, in a size exponential respect to the number of assets. That means that we can not obtain the unique efficiency frontier, but many of them and each one is related to different levels of risk. Such a problem is analogous to that of finding the ground state in long-ranged Ising spin glass with external field. In order to get the best portfolio (i.e. that is along the best efficiency frontier), we have to implement a two-step procedure, performing the exhaustive enumeration of all local minima. We develop a concrete application, where the different part of the proposed solution are computed. PACS. 89.65.Gh Economics, business, and financial markets

Evolutionary Local Search Algorithm for Portfolio Selection Problem: Spin Glass Based Approach

Nowadays, various imitations of natural processes are used to solve challenging optimization problems faster and more accurately. Spin glass based optimization, specifically, has shown strong local search capability and parallel processing. However, generally, spin glasses have a low rate of convergence, since they use Monte Carlo simulation techniques such as simulated annealing (SA). Here, we...

A study of phase transitions for convergence analysis of spin glasses: application to portfolio selection problems

To date, the spin glass paradigm has been gainfully used in solving a number of optimization problems by devising a mapping between our understanding of spin interactions within a natural spin glass and the given optimization problems. Among the determining factors in a natural spin glass, phase transition is a physical phenomenon that is controlled by temperature. Depending on the spin glass’s...

Portfolio Choice Based on Third-Degree Stochastic Dominance

We develop an optimization method for constructing investment portfolios that dominate a given benchmark portfolio in terms of third-degree stochastic dominance. Our approach relies on the properties of the semivariance function, a refinement of an existing ‘super-convex’ dominance condition and quadratic constrained programming. We apply our method to historical stock market data using an indu...

Portfolio Optimization with Mental Accounts

3 We integrate appealing features of Markowitz’s mean-variance portfolio theory (MVT) 4 and Shefrin and Statman’s behavioral portfolio theory (BPT) into a new mental accounting 5 (MA) framework. Features of the MA framework include an MA structure of portfolios, 6 a definition of risk as the probability of failing to reach the threshold level in each mental 7 account, and attitudes toward risk ...
