چکیده

1. Marine protected areas are increasingly being recommended as an essential component of the management of exploited marine species, but virtually no attention has been given to the influence of parasites. This may be substantial, as a primary effect of marine reserves is to increase the density of an exploited population within the reserve relative to outside the reserve, which may facilitate parasite transmission. 2. We used a simple deterministic model of microparasitic infection in a fishery with a reserve to investigate equilibrium yield and parasite prevalence inside and outside the reserve as a function of three control variables: the proportion of habitat inside the reserve, fishing mortality and the rate of interchange between the stock and the reserve. 3. While our model is generic, we parameterized it with values that may be appropriate to the interaction between abalone and Rickettsia . 4. The presence of a pathogen does not necessarily decrease yield when a reserve is present, particularly if the rate of movement of adult hosts between stock and reserve is low. 5. Synthesis and applications. Pathogens have important implications for the design of marine reserves. Our modelling identifies two key considerations. First, ‘fishing out’ a pathogen by reducing the host population density to a level below the threshold for disease maintenance is a potential management strategy that is made more difficult by establishing a reserve. Secondly, the effect of a highly transmissible pathogen without a reserve is to cause a rapid decline in equilibrium yield for efforts beyond those that produce maximum sustainable yield, making the fishery prone to collapse. Introducing a reserve decreases yield in this case, but makes the fishery much more resistant to collapse.

Exploring the Fishing by Stake-nets inside the Qeshm Island's Marine Protected Area

High population pressure in coastal areas has led to loss in many mangrove areas. Although these areas are fish nursery grounds, but there are no accurate and up-to-date data available. In this research, the catch data in the Qeshm Island marine protected area (MPA) were investigated using 11 stake nets. Totally, 81 specimens belong to 60 genera and 63 families caught, which majority of them we...

Coupling ecology and GIS to evaluate efficacy of marine protected areas in Hawaii.

In order to properly determine the efficacy of marine protected areas (MPAs), a seascape perspective that integrates ecosystem elements at the appropriate ecological scale is necessary. Over the past four decades, Hawaii has developed a system of 11 Marine Life Conservation Districts (MLCDs) to conserve and replenish marine resources around the state. Initially established to provide opportunit...

ارزیابی اثربخشی مناطق حفاظت‌شدۀ استان اصفهان در کاهش اثرات خشکسالی و مداخلات انسانی

Habitat heterogeneity plays an important role in increasing species diversity. Heterogeneity of habitats and protected areas can increase the ability of species to adapt to climate change. It is expected that appropriate heterogeneity is necessary for sustainability of protected areas. The influence of altitude on parameters such as temperature and precipitation and the role of microclimates in...

Special Section: Implementation and Management of Marine Protected Areas

Growing awareness of threats to marine ecosystems has led to the search for new conservation and management tools (Palumbi 2002; Palumbi et al. 2003). Increasingly, attention has focused on integrated ecosystem-based approaches, including marine protected areas. These tools are used to address a suite of goals such as conserving biodiversity, supporting fisheries, protecting natural and cultura...

Isolation and screening of antibacterial and enzyme producing marine actinobacteria to approach probiotics against some pathogenic vibrios in shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

The application of new probiotics is a good strategy in the biological control of infectious diseases in aquaculture. Approximately 100 marine actinobacteria isolates were obtained from 10 sediment samples of shrimp farms. Heat treatment of sediment samples resulted in a selective reduction of the non actinobacterial heterotrophic microflora. Starch nitrate agar medium exhibited more efficacy t...
