The intent of this study is to determine the minimum ambient illumination requirement for legible electronic-paper display. Not only the young but also the elderly were included as research subjects. Through the method of character-search task, the results indicated that the significant performance improvement of all subjects occurred at 52 lux on the search time and at 62 lux on the subjective visual fatigue. Therefore, the minimum ambient illumination requirement for legible electronic-paper display can be synthesized at 62 lux. This minimum point of ambient illumination for the young and the elderly represents that the reflective-type display started presenting its better legibility and the subjective visual fatigue started decreasing. As electronic-paper display technology applications gradually expand, product designers need notice this fundamental limit of electronic-paper display when they continue to create possible applications in the future. 2010 Elsevier B.V. Effects of ambient illumination, contrast polarity, and letter size on text legibility under glance-like reading.
Recent research on the legibility of digital displays has demonstrated a "positive polarity advantage", in which black-on-white text configurations are more legible than their negative polarity, white-on-black counterparts. Existing research in this area suggests that the positive polarity advantage stems from the brighter illumination emitted by positive polarity displays, as opposed to the da...
متن کاملExperiments on Adaptive Soft-Copy Color Reproduction
The perceived colors of an image seen on a self-luminous display are affected by viewing flare and perceptual phenomena, both of which vary with the ambient illumination. A framework for a display system that is capable of adapting its output to varying viewing environments is introduced. The proposed system uses a light sensor such as a CCD camera to estimate properties of ambient illumination...
متن کاملPsychological Effects of Ambient Illumination Control and Illumination Layout While Viewing Various Video Images
Recently enhancing the visual experience of the user has been a new trend for TV displays. This trend comes from the fact that changes of ambient illuminations while viewing a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) significantly affect human impressions. However, psychological effects caused by the combination of displayed video image and ambient illuminations have not been investigated. In the present r...
متن کاملA genre Analysis of the Scholarly Electronic Mail: Implications for Pedagogy
Scholarly mails apparently display stable conventional principles as an emerging genre. Thus, contributors should structure their electronic mails appropriately when writing for purposes of discussing professional topics. However, this requirement plunges many a scholar in dilemma as to how to go about this vital undertaking without written structural norms in electronic mail communication. Thi...
متن کاملThe Effect of Background Luminance and Ambient Illumination on Color Discrimination in a Crt
A matching task was used to measure the effects of ambient illumination, raster luminance, and target size on color discriminability in a CRT display. A set of ten easily distinguishable colors was presented under two conditions of ambient illumination (dark and bright) and two conditions of raster luminance (low and intermediate). Below this set, a target color was presented as either a circle...
