Peripheral nerve stimulation for treatment of postherpetic neuralgia: A Case report

چکیده
Neuromodulation techniques have been successfully used for a variety of neuropathic pain conditions. Th e aim of this paper is to present a case of the successful use of a subcutaneously placed peripheral nerve stimulator for treatment of intractable postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). A 57-year old man presented with a two-year history of left thoracic pain that developed aft er a vesicular rash. Focal neuropathic pain had not responded to treatment with multiple analgesic medications and steroid injections. Th e patient had signifi cant relief following implantation of a peripheral nerve stimulator. Th is case represents a contribution to the small but growing body of evidence indicating that peripheral nerve stimulation may be an eff ective option for treatment of PHN not responsive to less invasive modalities.

Peripheral nerve stimulation for unremitting ophthalmic postherpetic neuralgia.
Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a common cause of chronic pain in the elderly. Opioids and adjunctive analgesics such as antidepressants and anticonvulsants effectively reduce discomfort in many patients, while others have pain that remains resistant to all forms of therapy. Spinal cord stimulation has shown promise for severe truncal and extremity PHN, but has no impact on neuralgias of crania...

Herpes zoster is the consequence of reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus from dorsal root ganglia. Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) may be diagnosed when pain persists in a dermatomal pattern long after the vesicular erruption has healed. PHN is a kind of neuropathic pain. The pathophysiology of PHN is uncertain, but neuropathic pain due to denervation supersensitivity may be important to ...

Post herpetic neuralgia is a chronic neuropathic pain syndrome that it is characterized by pain in the area of the nerve involved distribution after the disappearance of herpes zoster lesions and it may be persistent, refractory and severe. Various treatments including medication, Botox injections, nerve block and physical modalities have been used in the treatment of this syndrome, each has ...

Postherpetic neuralgia is the most frequent complication of herpes zoster. Treatment of this neuropathic pain syndrome is difficult and often disappointing. Although postherpetic neuralgia is generally a self-limited condition, it can last indefinitely. Continuous epidural blockade for patients with acute zoster can shorten the duration of treatment. However, continuous epidural block has some ...

Excellent outcomes were achieved with spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for 7 to 10 days on 2 patients who developed postherpetic neuralgia. Both patients were within 2 to 3 months of the onset of the condition, and nerve blocks provided only temporary pain relief and drug therapies had poor efficacy. The authors believe that limited-duration SCS for subacute postherpetic neuralgia is a useful trea...
