Cavitation Bubble Dynamics and Noise Production

چکیده
This paper presents a summary of some recent observations of the interaction between individual traveling cavitation bubbles and the nearly solid surface. These reveal a complex micro-fluid-mechanics associated withThe interaction of the bubble with the boundary layer, the surface and the large pressure gradients exterior to the boundary layer which normally occur in the vicinity of a minimum pressure point. The details are important because they affect how the bubble collapses and therefore influence the noise produced and the damage potential of the cavitating flow. We present data showing how the noise from an individual event can be affected by these interaction effects. Since the scaling of cavitation phenomena is always an important issue we also describe the results of some experiments carried out to investigate the scaling of these interaction effects.

Amongst the variety of complex phenomena encountered in nonlinear physics, a hysteretic effect can be expected on ultrasound cavitation due to the intrinsic nonlinearity of bubble dynamics. When applying successive ultrasound shots for increasing and decreasing acoustic intensities, a hysteretic behaviour is experimentally observed on inertial cavitation activity, with a loop area sensitive to ...

Cavitation phenomena play important roles in many areas of science and engineering. The most interesting effect of the non-Newtonian properties of the liquid is the reduction of cavitation damage and noise. This article reviews experimental and theoretical efforts to understand such phenomena. The currently available information favors a description of the observed reduction of cavitation damag...
متن کاملOn the onset of transient cavitation in gassy liquids
This paper deals with a numerical and experimental study of ultrasound induced cavitation. On the basis of a computational analysis of Gilmore’s equation for the individual bubble dynamics, a slight decrease in the pressure radiated by a single bubble immediately before reaching the transient cavitation regime is predicted. Experiments presented in this paper confirm this observation. Therefore...
متن کاملEffect of Cavitation on Vortex Dynamics in a Submerged Laminar Jet
The effects of cavitation on vortex dynamics in a submerged, two-dimensional, planar laminar forced jet were studied numerically. A locally homogeneous cavitation model that accounts for nonlinear bubble dynamics and bubble/bubble interactions within spherical bubble clusters was employed. The effects of varying key ow and cavitation model parameters on ow/cavitation interactions were inves...
متن کاملNumerical Computation of Shock Waves in a Spherical Cloud of Cavitation Bubbles
The nonlinear dynamics of a spherical cloud of cavitation bubbles have been simulated numerically in order to learn more about the physical phenomena occurring in cloud cavitation. A finite cloud of nuclei is subject to a decrease in the ambient pressure which causes the cloud to cavitate. A subsequent pressure recovery then causes the cloud to collapse. This is typical of the transient behavio...
