An Alternative View of Widow Rockfish Productivity

چکیده

In west coast groundfish stock assessments, biological productivity is largely defined by a single parameter, i.e., steepness (h) of the Beverton-Holt spawner-recruit curve, which ranges from 0.20 (no compensation) to 1.00 (complete compensation). A steepness of 0.20 implies no latent surplus production and a total lack of resilience to the effects of exploitation, whereas a value of 1.0 implies a very strong density-dependent response and strong resilience to perturbations.

Essential Habitat Identification for Age-0 Rockfish along the Central Oregon Coast

—The habitat needs of nearshore juvenile rockfish Sebastes spp. have rarely been studied but are an essential component of habitat identification for management. We investigated the relationships between habitat type, species composition, and growth of juvenile rockfish after settlement into nearshore reefs and estuaries in central Oregon. We identify and prioritize essential fish habitat (EFH)...

Are the Subgenera of Sebastes Monophyletic?

We examined genetic relationships among Sebastes rockfishes to evaluate the subgeneric relationships within Sebastes. We analyzed restriction site variation (12S and 16S rRNA and NADH dehydrogenase-3 and -4 genes) by using parsimony and distance analyses. Seventy-one Sebastes species representing 16 subgenera were included. Thirteen subgenera were represented by more than one species, and three...

Ocean climate and prey availability affect the trophic level and reproductive success of the marbled murrelet, an endangered seabird

We investigated relationships between oceanographic processes, prey availability, diet and the reproductive success of the marbled murrelet Brachyramphus marmoratus (Alcidae), a federally threatened seabird. We predicted that cooler ocean conditions (which increase primary productivity in this eastern boundary upwelling system) should result in heightened prey availability and hence higher repr...

Development of Latrodectus Envenomation Severity Score (LESS); a Severity Index for Widow Spider Bite: Initial Step

Background: In order to describe the patients and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for widow spider envenomation, investigators require a reliable assessment tool. In this paper, the development of a clinical index for measuring the widow spider bite severity, Latrodectus Envenomation Severity Score (LESS), is described. Methods: According to the valid methods for index development, a D...
