Proctitis and herpes simplex virus in homosexual men.
نویسنده
چکیده
In a study of the prevalence of rectal infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV) in a group of homosexual men the magnified appearance of the rectal mucosa correlated with isolation of the virus. HSV was isolated from rectal material from five of 77 men with proctitis of unknown cause but from none of 44 control patients without proctitis; two of four men with HSV proctitis were asymptomatic. Thus, the magnified rectal mucosal image, showing severe congestion, haemorrhage, and pus, appears to be a sensitive indicator of the presence of HSV proctitis.

Herpes Simplex Viral Cytopathic Effect in Anorectal Cytology of a HIV Positive Homosexual Man Presented with Acute Proctitis
The characteristic viral cytopathic effects of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in anorectal cytology specimens are rarely encountered. When present, if clinically asymptomatic, this could represent subclinical shedding of the HSV. Men who have sex with men (MSM) have especially higher rates of shedding HSV than the general population [1,2]. HSV-2-seropositive MSM has more frequent subclinical HSV-2 ...

We report the case of a 17-year-old male who was initially assessed for pain with defecation, bloody rectal discharge, and diarrhea, consistent with proctitis. Though proctitis is most commonly due to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), infectious etiologies must also be considered, including sexually transmitted causes of infectious proctitis. In discussion of his sexual history, he identified a...

In a study of 180 male homosexual patients attending a venereal disease clinic, a correlation was sought between symptoms and signs of proctitis and the isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, group B streptococci, Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis and herpes simplex virus. Faecal specimens were examined for enteric pathogens and serological tests for hepatitis B vir...

متن کاملAnorectal and enteric infections in homosexual men.
Homosexual men are at increased risk for traditional sexually transmitted anorectal infections (gonorrhea, syphilis, venereal warts, herpes and chlamydial infection) and enteric infections characterized by a low infecting inoculum (hepatitis A and B, amebiasis, giardiasis, shigellosis and campylobacteriosis). Infections account for most of the gastrointestinal symptoms in homosexual men seen at...
