چکیده

Molecular dynamics simulation is performed on the buckling behavior of single and multi-walled carbon nanotubes under axial compression. Brenner’s ‘second generation’ empirical potential is used to describe the many-body short range interatomic interactions for singlewalled carbon nanotubes, while the Lennard Jones 12-6 model for van der Waals potential is added for multi-walled carbon nanotubes to describe the interlayer interactions. Results indicate that there exists an optimum diameter for single-walled nanotubes at which the buckling load cr P reaches its maximum value. The buckling load cr P for single-walled nanotube increases rapidly with the increase of the diameter d up to the optimum diameter. However, any further increase in the diameter d after the optimum diameter will result in a slow decline in buckling load cr P until a steady value is reached. The buckling behavior of multi-walled nanotubes is also presented The effects of layers on the buckling load of multi-walled nanotubes are examined.

Radius Dependence of Hydrogen Storage Inside Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes in an Array

In this study, we have investigated radius dependence of hydrogen storage within armchair (n,n) single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) in a square arrays. To this aim, we have employed equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Our simulations results reveal that radius of carbon nanotubes are an important and influent factor in hydrogen distribution inside carbon nanotubes and consequentl...

Molecular Dynamics Investigation of The Elastic Constants and Moduli of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Determination of the mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes is an essential step in their applications from macroscopic composites to nano-electro-mechanical systems. In this paper we report the results of a series of molecular dynamics simulations carried out to predict the elastic constants, i.e. the elements of the stiffness tensor, and the elastic moduli, namely the Young’s and shear mod...

Role of Interatomic Potentials in Simulation of Thermal Transport in Carbon Nanotubes

Interatomic potentials, which describe interactions between elements of nanosystems, are crucial in theoretical study of their physical properties. We focus on two well known empirical potentials, i.e. Tersoff's and Brenner's potentials, and compare their performance in calculation of thermal transport in carbon nanotubes. In this way, we study the temperature and diameter dependence of thermal...

A Molecular Dynamics Modeling on Cantilevered Triple-Walled Carbon Nanotube Resonators

We introduce intertube interactions of a cantilevered triple-walled carbon-nanotube (TWCNT) resonators via classical molecular dynamics simulations. The fundamental frequencies of TWCNT resonators were less than those of singleand double-walled carbon nanotubes of a given diameter because of the increasing intertube disturbance. Our results imply that for a nanotube with a given diameter, the f...

A molecular dynamics simulation of water transport through C and SiC nanotubes: Application for desalination

In this work the conduction of ion-water solution through two discrete bundles of armchair carbon and silicon carbide nanotubes, as useful membranes for water desalination, is studied. In order that studies on different types of nanotubes be comparable, the chiral vectors of C and Si-C nanotubes are selected as (7,7) and (5,5), respectively, so that    a similar volume of fluid is investigated ...
