The effects of (incentivized) belief elicitation in public goods experiments

چکیده
Belief elicitation is an important methodological issue for experimental economists. There are two generic questions: 1) Do incentives increase belief accuracy? 2) Are there interaction effects of beliefs and decisions? We investigate these questions in the case of finitely repeated public goods experiments. We find that belief accuracy is significantly higher when beliefs are incentivized. The relationship between contributions and beliefs is slightly steeper under incentives. However, we find that incentivized beliefs tend to lead to higher contribution levels than either nonincentivized beliefs or no beliefs at all. We discuss the implications of our results for the design of public good experiments.

The Effects of (Incentivized) Belief Elicitation in Public Good Experiments
We investigate the impact of eliciting beliefs about the average contribution of other group members in finitely repeated public goods experiments. We find that belief accuracy is significantly higher when beliefs are incentivized. The distribution of beliefs as well as the relationship between contributions and beliefs are unaffected by incentives. Eliciting incentivized beliefs increases cont...

Belief Elicitation in Experiments: Is there a Hedging Problem? Belief elicitation in economics experiments usually relies on paying subjects according to the accuracy of stated beliefs in addition to payments for other decisions. Such incentives, however, allow risk-averse subjects to hedge with their stated beliefs against adverse outcomes of other decisions in the experiment. This raises two ...
متن کاملComparing the effect of religiosity on public goods production and natural resource conservation: a experimental study
In this research, the effect of religiosity on participation in the production of public goods and preservation of natural resources has been investigated. Extraction of participation data and conservation of natural resource has been done through the implementation of online laboratory of public goods and natural resource games. To extract the three dimensions of religiosity (belief, rituals a...
متن کاملHierarchical Bayesian Analysis of Biased Beliefs and Distributional Other-Regarding Preferences
This study investigates the relationship between an actor’s beliefs about others’ other-regarding (social) preferences and her own other-regarding preferences, using an “avant-garde” hierarchical Bayesian method. We estimate two distributional other-regarding preference parameters, α and β, of actors using incentivized choice data in binary Dictator Games. Simultaneously, we estimate the distri...
متن کاملThinking like a game theorist: factors affecting the frequency of equilibrium play
Previous research has reported conflicting results on whether and the extent to which individuals play equilibria of experimental games. Two experiments reported in this paper ask whether the act of eliciting beliefs about the actions of others influences a subjects’ likelihood of playing an equilibrium in a social dilemma or public goods game. The first experiment compares two versions of a li...
