Mesoscale Distribution of Springtime Waters and Nutrients near the Continental Shelf Break, Beaufort Sea, Alaska
نویسندگان
چکیده
Forty two sites on the Alaskan Beaufort Sea shelf break were sampled by helicopter in April 2003 for hydrographic parameters and nutrients. Mesoscale maps delineated two eddies and the Beaufort shelf break current. Higher-salinity nutrient-rich waters upwelled onto the shelf, and the depth of the main pycnocline shoaled to <22 m. A plume of 31.40-31.80 salinity water at 10 m was flowing off the shelf, and maps of Brunt Vaisala frequencies and Richardson numbers showed that its presence weakened the pycnocline stability. The high shelf-break nutrient concentrations could support a spring-bloom productivity of 23 g-C m y, which, when added to previous summertime productivity measurements, demonstrated significant production along the Beaufort Sea shelf break.

Correcting Nitrate Profiles Measured by the In Situ Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer in Arctic Ocean Waters
A recently commercialized sensor, the In Situ Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer (ISUS), can determine seawater nitrate concentrations rapidly. Procedures for incorporating ISUS data within routine conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) profiling studies have not been described. Using a CTD system with an ISUS, vertical hydrographic profiles with nutrient concentrations were determined at 42 sit...

This project identifies previously unknown demersal fish habitat along the continental slope along the eastern Chukchi Sea and Alaskan and Canadian Beaufort Sea waters. It is based on an analysis of several data sets obtained during JWACS 2002, a research expedition in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas in 2002. Data were collected by a variety of means: the ship‘s Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler ...

Abstrac t —Six years of bottomtrawl survey data, including over 6000 trawls covering over 200 km2 of bottom area throughout Alaska’s subarctic marine waters, were analyzed for patterns in species richness, diversity, density, and distribution of skates. The Bering Sea continental shelf and slope, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska regions were stratified by geographic subregion and depth. Spe...
متن کاملMesoscale eddies dominate surface phytoplankton in northern Gulf of Alaska
The HNLC waters of the Gulf of Alaska normally receive too little iron for primary productivity to draw down silicate and nitrate in surface waters, even in spring and summer. Our observations of chlorophyll sensed by SeaWiFS north of 54 N in pelagic waters (>500 m depth) of the gulf found that, on average, more than half of all surface chlorophyll was inside the 4 cm contours of anticyclonic m...
متن کاملInternal Tides and Baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea. Part I: Model Description and Comparison of Model Results to Observations
In the southern Weddell Sea, several water masses with the capability to form Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) meet near the continental shelf break. The internal tidal field over the continental shelf break here is of interest due to its potential to mix these waters and form AABW. A modified version of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) was utilized to investigate the internal tidal fields generate...
