چکیده

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at frequencies near 1000 Hz were recently discovered in several x-ray binaries containing neutron stars. Two sources show no correlation between QPO frequency and source count rate (Berger et al. 1996, Zhang et al. 1996). We suggest that the QPO frequency is determined by the Keplerian orbital frequency near the marginally stable orbit predicted by general relativity in strong gravitational fields (Muchotrzeb-Czerny 1986, Paczyński 1987, Kluzniak et al. 1990). The QPO frequencies observed from 4U 1636-536 imply that the mass of the neutron star is 2.02 ± 0.12M⊙. Interpretation of the 4.1 keV absorption line observed from 4U 1636536 (Waki et al. 1984) as due to Fe XXV ions then implies a neutron star radius of 9.6± 0.6 km. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — gravitation — relativity — stars: individual (4U 1636-536, 4U 1608-52) — stars: neutron — X-rays: stars

kHz Quasi Periodic Oscillations in Low Mass X-ray Binaries as Probes of General Relativity in the Strong Field Regime

We consider the interpretation of a pair of kHz Quasi Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the Fourier spectra of two Low Mass X-Ray Binaries, Sco X–1 and 4U1608-52, hosting an old accreting neutron star. The observed frequency difference of these QPOs decreaseas as their frequency increases, contrary to simple beat frequency models, which predict a constant frequency difference. We show that the be...

The Relativistic Precession Model for Qpos in Low Mass X-ray Binaries

The relativistic precession model for quasi periodic oscillations, QPOs, in low mass X-ray binaries is reviewed. The behaviour of three simultaneous types of QPOs is well matched in terms of the fundamental frequencies for geodesic motion in the strong field of the accreting compact object for reasonable star masses and spin frequencies. The model ascribes the higher frequency kHz QPOs, the low...

Implications of kHz Quasi–Periodic Brightness Oscillations in X–Ray Binaries for Neutron Star Structure

Kilohertz Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in low-mass X-ray binaries may represent the orbital frequencies of innermost Keplerian orbits around accreting neutron stars. With this assumption, attempts have recently been made to derive constraints on the mass of the neutron star and its equation of state. These estimates have so far relied on approximate treatment of rotation in general relativity. I...

Kilohertz Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Low-mass X-ray Binaries

In early 1996 a series of discoveries begun with NASA’s Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer of a new, up to then unknown astrophysical phenomenon. It turned out that accreting low magnetic-field neutron stars show quasi-periodic oscillations in their X-ray flux at rates of up to more than a kilohertz. These kHz QPO, now reported from eleven different systems, are among the fastest phenomena in the sky ...

Spectral Signatures of Kilohertz Quasi- Periodic Oscillations from Accreting Neu- Tron Stars

Correlations discovered between millisecond timing properties and spectral properties in neutron star x-ray binaries are described and then interpreted in relation to accretion flows in the systems. Use of joint timing and spectral observations to test for the existence of the marginally stable orbit, a key prediction of strong field general relativity, is described and observations of the neut...
