Recognition of Shapes for Object Retrieval in Image Databases by Discrete Curve Evolution

چکیده
This paper presents the recognition of shapes for object retrieval in image databases using skeleton-based and contour-based representation by discrete curve evaluation and two consecutive primitive edges. Humans tend to use high-level concepts in everyday life. Object segmentation and recognition is the primary step of computer vision to achieve image retrieval of high-level image analysis. Contour-based and skeleton-based representations are important for object recognition in different areas. In comparing the contour-based approaches with the skeleton-based approaches for object representation, the contour-based is more sensitive to noise than a skeleton-based approach based on a good skeleton pruning method, but a rough shape classification can be performed since the obtained skeletons do not represent any shape details. In this paper, we proposed a novel method to integrate the contour-based approaches with skeleton-based approaches for object representation. The contour-based and skeleton-based representations are based on the proposal of two consecutive primitive edges method and discrete curve evolution method respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to Torsello and Hancock’s method in terms of retrieval accuracy.

Automatic information retrieval in the field of shape recognition has been widely covered by many research fields. Various techniques have been developed using different approaches such as intensity-based, modelbased and shape-based methods. Whichever is the way to represent the objects in images, a recognition method should be robust in the presence of scale change, translation and rotation. I...

A hierarchical framework for the recognition of compound deformable shapes is developed. In extension to traditional approaches an additional layer of control is introduced to guide the local search for shapes. This is realized by incorporating knowledge about their spatial relationships. A new technique of expectation maps is applied to allow parallel shape searches to inspire each other. Furt...

In content based image retrieval, systems allow users to ask for objects similar in shape to a query object. However, there is no clear understanding of how computational shape similarity corresponds to human shape similarity. In this paper several shape similarity measures were evaluated on planar, connected, non-occluded binary shapes. Shape similarity using algebraic moments, spline curve di...

The recent increased usage of image and multimedia databases has motivated research in developing and applying shape similarity measures. Enhancing color and texture based similarity measures by the use of shape information is unavoidable, since only in very restricted domains can color and texture information alone lead to systems which perform reasonably. Shape is an important part of the sem...
