Contributions of biogenic volatile organic compounds to net ecosystem carbon flux in a ponderosa pine plantation

چکیده
When assessing net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB), respiration is generally assumed to be the only significant loss of carbon to the atmosphere. However, carbon is also emitted from ecosystems in the form of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Here we consider the magnitude of systematic difference caused by omitting this additional carbon loss from the net ecosystem carbon balance, as compared to the NEE term, of the ponderosa pine plantation at Blodgett Forest. We find that 9.4 (range 6.2e12.5) g C m 2 yr 1 were emitted from this ecosystem as BVOCs. This is 4.0 (2.0e7.9) % of annual NEE, and neglecting this additional loss of carbon causes an overestimation of carbon storage for this rapidly growing commercial forest plantation. For ecosystems that are not storing carbon as rapidly, where photosynthesis and respiration are more closely balanced, ignoring BVOC emission may cause a larger error in the estimation of NECB. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Quantifying biogenic and anthropogenic contributions to acetone mixing ratios in a rural environment
Acetone was one of the most abundant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) observed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains (California, USA). Mixing ratios were measured hourly above a ponderosa pine plantation using an automated in situ dual-channel GC-FID system throughout July 1997, from July through October 1998, and #uxes were measured with a relaxed eddy accumulator from July through September 1999. ...
متن کاملOzone fluxes in a Pinus ponderosa ecosystem are dominated by non-stomatal processes: Evidence from long-term continuous measurements
Ecosystems remove ozone from the troposphere through both stomatal and non-stomatal depositions. The portion of ozone taken up through stomata has an oxidative effect causing damage. We used amultiyear dataset to assess ozone deposition to a ponderosa pine plantation near Blodgett Forest, Georgetown, California. Environmental parameters, water and ozone concentrations and fluxes were measured co...
متن کاملA new feedback mechanism linking forests, aerosols, and climate
The possible connections between the carbon balance of ecosystems and aerosol-cloud-climate interactions play a significant role in climate change studies. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, whereas the net effect of atmospheric aerosols is to cool the climate. Here, we investigated the connection between forest-atmosphere carbon exchange and aerosol dynamics in the continental boundary layer ...
متن کاملEddy covariance measurements with high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometry: a new approach to chemically resolved aerosol fluxes
Although laboratory studies show that biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) yield substantial secondary organic aerosol (SOA), production of biogenic SOA as indicated by upward fluxes has not been conclusively observed over forests. Further, while aerosols are known to deposit to surfaces, few techniques exist to provide chemically-resolved particle deposition fluxes. To better constrain a...
متن کاملInfluences of recovery from clear-cut, climate variability, and thinning on the carbon balance of a young ponderosa pine plantation
From 1999 to 2002, the variations in carbon flux due to management practices (shrub removal, thinning) and climate variability were observed in a young ponderosa pine forest originated from clear-cutting and plantation in 1990. These measurements were done at the Blodgett Forest Ameriflux site located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Thinning in spring 2000 decreased the leaf area ...
