چکیده

Rea, D.K. and Scheidegger, K.F., 1979. Eastern Pacific spreading rate fluctuation and its relation to Pacific area volcanic episodes. J. Volcanol. Geotherm. Res., 5: 135--148. Sea-floor spreading rates from four locations along the Nazca-Pacific plate boundary and one along the Juan de Fuca-Pacific plate boundary show variations over the past 2.4 m.y., with decreasing rates prior to the Jaramillo to Olduvai time interval (0.92--1.73 m.y. ago) and increasing rates since then. Other Pacific area volcanic phenomena in mid-plate and convergent-boundary settings also show minima about 1.3--1.5 m.y. ago and a maximum at present and another maximum about 5 m.y. ago: extrusion rates along the Hawaiian Ridge; volcanic episodes associated with calc-alkalic provinces of western Oregon and Central America; temporal variations in the SiO 2 content of Aleutian ash layers; and the number of deep-sea ash layers. These phenomena may fluctuate in response to changing spreading rates. 'During times of more rapid spreading increased shear and melting along lithospheric boundaries may occasion increased volcanic activity, whereas during times of less rapid spreading volcanic activity may be less intense.

Volcanic eruptions on mid-ocean ridges: New evidence from the superfast spreading East Pacific Rise, 17 –19 S

[1] Side-scan sonar, submersible observations and sampling of lava flows from the East Pacific Rise, 17 –19 S constrain the character and variability of submarine volcanic eruptions along mid-ocean ridges. Nine separate lava sequences were mapped using relative age and lithological contrasts among recovered samples. Axial lengths activated during eruptive episodes range from 1 to >18 km; indivi...

Volcanic mound fields on the East Pacific Rise, 16 –19 S: Low effusion rate eruptions at overlapping spreading centers for the past 1 Myr

[1] Volcanic mound fields identified on SeaMARC II and HMR1 12 kHz side-scan data from the southern East Pacific Rise (SEPR) occur near overlapping spreading centers (OSCs) and migration traces of OSCs. The volcanic mound fields appear as a distinctive hummocky seafloor fabric due to side-scan backscatter reflections from clusters of moundshaped reflectors. The lack of growth of the mound field...

The age and origin of the Pacific islands: a geological overview.

The Pacific Ocean evolved from the Panthalassic Ocean that was first formed ca 750 Ma with the rifting apart of Rodinia. By 160 Ma, the first ocean floor ascribed to the current Pacific plate was produced to the west of a spreading centre in the central Pacific, ultimately growing to become the largest oceanic plate on the Earth. The current Nazca, Cocos and Juan de Fuca (Gorda) plates were ini...

50-Ma initiation of Hawaiian-Emperor bend records major change in Pacific plate motion.

The Hawaiian-Emperor bend has played a prominent yet controversial role in deciphering past Pacific plate motions and the tempo of plate motion change. New ages for volcanoes of the central and southern Emperor chain define large changes in volcanic migration rate with little associated change in the chain's trend, which suggests that the bend did not form by slowing of the Hawaiian hot spot. I...

Hydrothermal systems and mineralization of volcanic arcs: Comparison of West Pacific and Mediterranean arcs

Introduction Hydrothermal systems and their associated metal deposits have been studied at oceanic spreading centers since the late 1970s when they were first discovered. More recently, those studies have been extended to subduction zone hydrothermal systems including active volcanic arcs and back-arc environments. Oceanic spreading centers compose a global ridge system where new ocean crust is...
