Task Interruption: Resumption Lag and the Role of Cues
نویسندگان
چکیده
The consequences of interrupting someone in the middle of a complex task are of considerable practical and theoretical interest. We examine one behavioral measure of the disruption caused by task interruption, namely the resumption lag, or the time needed to “collect one’s thoughts” and restart a task after an interruption is over. The resumption lag (in our task environment) was double the interval between uninterrupted actions (3.8 s vs. 1.9 s), indicating a substantial disruptive effect. To probe the nature of the disruption, we examined the role of external cues associated with the interrupted task, finding that cues available immediately before an interruption facilitate performance immediately afterwards (reducing the resumption lag). This c u e availability effect suggests that people deploy preparatory perceptual and memory processes, apparently spontaneously, to mitigate the disruptive effects of task interruption.

Interruptions in the Tower of London Task: Can Preparation Minimise Disruption?
Responding to computer-initiated notifications requires a shift in attention and therefore disrupts the flow of work. Two exploratory experiments investigate how this decrement can be minimised when a short preparatory time is available before switching to deal with the interrupting task. The execution phase of a computer-based Tower of London task was interrupted by the requirement to perform ...

A series of experiments introduced interruptions to the execution phase of simple Tower of London problems and found that the opportunity for preparation before the break in task reduced the time cost at resumption. Retrieval of the suspended goal was facilitated when participants were given the opportunity to encode retrieval cues during an "interruption lag" (the brief time before engaging in...

OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of interruptions and task complexity on error rates when prescribing with computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems, and to categorize the types of prescribing errors. OBJECTIVE We examined the effect of interruption modality (visual or auditory) on primary task (visual) resumption to determine which modality was the least disruptive. BACKGROUND Theories examining interruption modality have focused on specific periods of the interruption timeline. Preemption theory has focused on the switch from the primary task to the interrupting task. Multiple resource t...
