چکیده
We analyze RXTE/PCA observations of the black hole candidate and galactic superluminal source GRO J1655–40 during its recent outburst. We show that during its decay to quiescence, GRO J1655–40 goes through the high, intermediate, and low state (and that at the beginning of its decay it might have even shown signatures of a very high state), just like other black hole candidates. This is the first time that such a transition is observed in a galactic superluminal source. We discuss what are the implications of these results on the hypothesis that the spin of the black hole in superluminal sources is much higher than in other black hole candidates. We suggest Nova Sco 1994 (GRO 1655-40) as a possible relic of a Gamma Ray Burster (GRB) and Type Ib supernova (SN) explosion, showing that there is evidence both that the black hole was spun up by accretion and that there was a supernova explosion. We use the disc energy delivered from the rotational energy of the black hole to power the SN, and give arguments that roughly equal energy goes int...

Using the RXTE PCA we discovered dips in the X-ray light curves of the black-hole candidate GRO J1655−40 during outburst. They are short (∼minute) and deep (down to ∼8% of the out-of-dip intensity). Similar kind of dips were found in 90 s measurements of the RXTE ASM during the same outburst. The occurrences of the dips are consistent with the optically determined orbital period, and were found...

The black hole candidate LMC X-3 varies by a factor of four in the soft Xrays on a timescale of 200 or 100days (Cowley et al., 1991). We have monitored LMC X-3 with RXTE in three to four week intervals starting in December 1996, obtaining a large observational database that sheds light on the nature of the long term Xray variability in this source. In this paper we present the results of this m...

We present broad-band (2 keV to 2 MeV) x-ray spectra of GRO J1655–40, a luminous X-ray transient and occasional source of relativistic radio jets, obtained with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE). In one observation, the luminosity is found to be 18% of the Eddington limit, which is one of the highest luminosities ever observed f...
