Origins of Canadian Raising in voiceless-coda effects: A case study in phonologization
نویسنده
چکیده
Canadian Raising is the best-known of a diverse class of English allophonic height alternations in /ai/ conditioned by coda voicing. The alternations have been independently re-innovated and show a systematic typology: The voiceless environment selects the higher allophone. We hypothesize that the phonetic basis of the asymmetry is the tendency for diphthongs to assimilate to their nuclei before voiced codas and to their offglides before voiceless ones. Predictions are tested in an instrumental study of the development of a Canadian-Raising-like alternation in and around Cleveland, Ohio, in 28 speakers born between 1878 and 1977. Results support the hypothesis and contradict two widespread views about Canadian Raising, (1) that it arises out of the Great Vowel Shift and (2) that diphthongs are less diphthongal in the short pre-voiceless environment.

Evolutionary Phonology and The Life Cycle of Voiceless
In this chapter I examine the phonetic origins of voiceless sonorants cross-linguistically within the general framework of Evolutionary Phonology (Blevins 2004, 2006, 2008b, 2014). In terms of a general hierarchy of contrast, we observe that: voiceless obstruents are common; voiceless sonorant consonants are uncommon; voiceless vowels are extremely rare. One phonetic source of voiceless sonoran...
متن کاملDifferences in coda voicing trigger changes in gestural timing: A test case from the American English diphthong /aɪ/
We investigate the hypothesis that duration and spectral differences in vowels before voiceless versus voiced codas originate from a single source, namely the reorganization of articulatory gestures relative to one another in time. As a test case, we examine the American English diphthong /aɪ/, in which the acoustic manifestations of the nucleus /a/ and offglide /ɪ/ gestures are relatively easy...
متن کاملLinguistic generalization in L 2 consonant identification accuracy : a preliminary report
Cross-language perception of phonetic features was investigated via an experiment in which native speakers of Korean and English identified speech sounds varying across voicing (voiced vs. voiceless), place of articulation (labial vs. coronal), and manner of articulation (stop vs. fricative) features as well as prosodic context (syllable initial vs. syllable final). Because Korean has no anteri...
متن کاملSubphonemic Detail in Lexical Perception and Production: The Case of Canadian Raising
Two experiments investigated sensitivity to dialect-specific subphonemic information in spoken word recognition, and the relationship with individuals’ production of the same dialect-specific cues. The phenomenon evaluated was raising of /aj/ before voiceless consonants in Canadian English. In the first experiment, eye movement patterns during on-line speech comprehension indicated that listene...
متن کاملComparing L1's effects on English coda obstruent perception: Mandarin and Korean identification performance
This study investigates the perceptual confusion of English obstruents in the coda position by Mandarin and Korean-speaking L2 learners. The two languages differ in that Mandarin does not allow obstruent codas, while Korean neutralizes underlying laryngeal and manner contrasts into voiceless stop codas. The stimuli are eight English obstruents /p b t d f v θ ð/ combined with the vowel /ɑ/. 41 M...
