information required to benchmark yields. These include Growers, breeders and policy makers require benchmarks to measure performance in regard to management of the crop, genetic improvement and prospects for investment and employment. Cropping systems are difficult to benchmark because of the unpredictable nature of the climate. In this paper previous attempts to benchmark sugarcane production systems in Australia and South Africa are reviewed, and benchmark yields produced by two models are compared. Some South African commercial yields are then compared with appropriate benchmarks and possibilities for yield improvements are assessed. Efficiency of various processes in the use of radiation and water by the crop, and where gains are most likely to be made in breeding and in management, are then considered. The most promising avenues for yield gains in both industries are (i) raising the standard of field management to narrow the gap between actual and benchmark yields (ii) introduction of supplementary irrigation in some rainfed areas where attainable yields are well below potential, (iii) increasing irrigation water use efficiency and (iv) increased partitioning of dry matter to sucrose.

Optimisation of assembly scheduling in VCIM systems using genetic algorithm

Assembly plays an important role in any production system as it constitutes a significant portion of the lead time and cost of a product. Virtual computer-integrated manufacturing (VCIM) system is a modern production system being conceptually developed to extend the application of traditional computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) system to global level. Assembly scheduling in VCIM systems is ...

Ideas for Extending the Approach to Evaluating Health in All Policies in South Australia; Comment on “Developing a Framework for a Program Theory-Based Approach to Evaluating Policy Processes and Outcomes: Health in All Policies in South Australia”

Since 2008, the government of South Australia has been using a Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach to achieve their strategic plan (South Australia Strategic Plan of 2004). In this commentary, we summarize some of the strengths and contributions of the innovative evaluation framework that was developed by an embedded team of academic researchers. To inform how the use of HiAP is evaluated mo...

A Review of Green Manuring Practices in Sugarcane Production

The incorporation of ecological practices into sugarcane production and management has the potential to arrest and ameliorate the negative effects of monocropping on soil degradation and yield decline. Historically, the production of green manures as cover or break crops has been shown to improve the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil for many crops in production agriculture....

Carbon sequestration in sugarcane plant and soil with different cultivation systems

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a multi-purpose crop, mainly planted in South-western (SW) parts of Iran. However, the capability of sugarcane farms to sequestrate carbon into soil and plant is not well documented. In this research, the carbon sequestration in sugarcane plant and soil in a ratooning traditional cultivation system at the Amirkabir Sugarcane Agro-Industry Complex...

Review of Research into the Role of Silicon for Sugarcane Production

Although silicon (Si) is one of the most abundant elements found in the earth’s crust, it is mostly inert and only slightly soluble and available to plants. With the exception of potassium, sugarcane is known to take up more Si than any other mineral nutrient, with the potential to accumulate up to 400 kg ha of Si, in a 12-month old irrigated crop. This paper documents some of the more importan...
