چکیده

We present the results of a wide-field survey designed to measure the size, inclination, and radial distributions of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs). The survey found 86 KBOs in 73 square degrees observed to limiting red magnitude 23.7 using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the 12k x 8k CCD Mosaic camera. For the first time, both ecliptic and off-ecliptic fields were examined to more accurately constrain the inclination distribution of the KBOs. The survey data were processed using an automatic moving object detection algorithm, allowing a careful characterization of the biases involved. In this work, we quantify fundamental parameters of the Classical KBOs (CKBOs), the most numerous objects found in our sample, using the new data and a maximum likelihood simulation. Deriving results from our best-fit model, we find that the size distribution follows a differential power law with exponent q = 4.0 −0.5 (1σ, or 68.27% confidence). In addition, the CKBOs inhabit a very thick disk consistent with a Gaussian distribution of inclinations with a Half-Width of i1/2 = 20 ◦+6 ◦

Pencil - Beam Searches for Faint

Motivated by a desire to understand the size distribution of objects in the Kuiper belt, an observing program has been conducted at the CFHT and Palomar 5-m telescopes. We have conducted pencil-beam searches for outer solar system objects to a limiting magnitude of R 26. Fields were searched using software recombinations of many short exposures shifted at diierent angular rates in order to dete...

Formation and Evolution of the Trans-neptunian Belt and Dust

Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) with diameter greater than 100 km currently moving in not too eccentric orbits could be formed directly by the contraction of large rarefied condensations. Along with the gravitational influence of planets, gravitational interactions of TNOs played a certain role in their orbital evolution as well. More than 20% of Earth-crossing objects could have come from the t...

Generation of Highly Inclined Trans-neptunian Objects by Planet Nine

The trans-Neptunian region of the solar system exhibits an intricate dynamical structure, much of which can be explained by an instability-driven orbital history of the giant planets. However, the origins of a highly inclined, and in certain cases retrograde, population of trans-Neptunian objects remain elusive within the framework of this evolutionary picture. In this work, we show that the ex...

Physical Properties of Trans - Neptunian Object ( 20000 ) Varuna

We present new time-resolved photometric observations of the bright trans-Neptunian object (20000) Varuna and use them to study the rotation period, shape, and color. In observations from 2001 February and April, we find a best-fit two-peaked lightcurve with period 6.3442 ± 0.0002 hr. The peak-to-peak photometric range in the R-band is 0.42± 0.02 mag. We find no rotational variation in colors o...

Comet Hazard to the Earth

Migration of trans-Neptunian objects to the Earth is considered. Due to the gravitational influence of large trans-Neptunian objects and mutual collisions, some objects can get such orbits, from which they can be moved inside the Solar System under the gravitational influence of planets. About 10-20% or even more 1-km Earth-crossers could have come from the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt and can move in...
