Safe handling of tissue containing radioactive substances.

چکیده
Patients recently treated with radioactive isotopes may present problems or even hazards during physical examination, operation or autopsy, especially following the use of iodine isotopes and 198Au. 32P is rarely a significant hazard. Contamination of victims of radiation accidents may be a problem initially, but they are usually promptly decontaminated. Guidance of the hospital's radiation safety officer is helpful, particularly with regard to handling of contaminated persons or materials. Long-lived isotopes, such as radium or thorotrast, are usually present in too low concentration to be dangerous. Projected use of artificial hearts powered by plutonium should not be hazardous because of adequate shielding of the source.

Preparation of radioactive iodocasein.
We have recently prepared iodocasein containing radioactive iodine (1’31) for use in studies, to be described in detail elsewhere, on the metabolism of calorigenic substances in human beings. The procedure followed was, in general, that of Reineke and Turner (1,2) except for modifications necessitated by the incorporation and handling of Pal. These modifications shorten the procedure somewhat a...

متن کاملAppropriate procedures for the safe handling and pathologic examination of technetium-99m-labelled specimens.
Technetium 99m may now be used to identify sentinel nodes for surgical excision in a growing number of cancer sites. The pathology specimens of these sentinel nodes and of any injected tumoural sites are radioactive. Consequently, specific clinical and laboratory procedures must be developed to handle these specimens safely. It is recommended that specimens containing the injection site should ...
