چکیده

Usually, Ad Hoc network studies concentrate on network layer procedures, such as routing, and performance of the upper layer protocols of the network. The research on ad hoc networking is mostly focused on the network layer solution and the characteristics of the used link technology are analyzed only superficially. Moreover, practically all ad hoc network simulators and testbeds assume IEEE 802.11 as link technology. In this paper, we review the characteristics of four link technologies: IEEE 802.11, HiperLAN/2, Bluetooth, and HomeRF. We discuss the interactions of the link technology characteristics and the network layer procedures. Furthermore, we study how the distinct features of the link technologies may support or hinder the functionality of the ad hoc routing protocols. We show that the nature of the link technology and the interactions between the link technology features and the network layer procedures may have huge impact to the behavior of the multihop ad hoc networks. Thus, different link technology types should be taken into account when assessing feasibility of the network layer solutions. Moreover, it is challenging to design network layer of an ad hoc network so that it would provide good performance over all link technologies.

Improving Quality of Service Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using OLSR

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are constructed by mobile nodes without access point. Since MANET has certain constraints, including power shortages, an unstable wireless environment and node mobility, more power-efficient and reliable routing protocols are needed. The OLSR protocol is an optimization of the classical link state algorithm. OLSR introduces an interesting concept, the multipoint r...

Estimating Reliability in Mobile ad-hoc Networks Based on Monte Carlo Simulation (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Each system has its own definition of reliability. Reliability in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) could be interpreted as, the probability of reaching a message from a source node to destination, successfully. The variability and volatility of the MANET configuration makes typical reliability methods (e.g. reliability block diagram) inappropriate. It is because, no single structure or configurat...

The Utility of Hello Messages for Determining Link Connectivity

Future wireless applications will take advantage of rapidly deployable, self-configuring multihop ad hoc networks. Because of the difficulty of obtaining IEEE 802.11 feedback about link connectivity in real networks, many multihop ad hoc networks utilize hello messages to determine local connectivity. This paper uses an implementation of the Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing proto...

Multiple Access Protocols with Smart Antennas in Multihop Ad Hoc Rural-Area Networks

Multihop ad hoc networking is a very appealing technology for the deployment of wireless data networks. It eliminates the need for network planning and the reliance on fixed infrastructure. Multihop ad hoc networks are designed with a self-configuring capability and are able to adapt to the addition or removal of network radio units (nodes). This capability makes them simple to install, allowin...
