چکیده

To cope with the richness in appearance variation found in real-world data under natural illumination, we propose to synthesize training data capturing these variations for material classification. Using synthetic training data created from separately acquired material and illumination characteristics allows to overcome the problems of existing material databases which only include a tiny fraction of the possible real-world conditions under controlled laboratory environments. However, it is essential to utilize a representation for material appearance which preserves fine details in the reflectance behavior of the digitized materials. As BRDFs are not sufficient for many materials due to the lack of modeling mesoscopic effects, we present a high-quality BTF database with 22,801 densely measured view-light configurations including surface geometry measurements for each of the 84 measured material samples. This representation is used to generate a database of synthesized images depicting the materials under different view-light conditions with their characteristic surface geometry using image-based lighting to simulate the complexity of real-world scenarios. We demonstrate that our synthesized data allows classifying materials under complex real-world

Material Classification in theWild: Do Synthesized Training Data Generalise Better than Real-world Training Data?

We question the dominant role of real-world training images in the field of material classification by investigating whether synthesized data can generalise more effectively than real-world data. Experimental results on three challenging real-world material databases show that the best performing pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures can achieve up to 91.03% mean average ...

Bidirectional Texture Function Three Dimen- sional Pseudo Gaussian Markov Random Field Model∗

The Bidirectional Texture Function (BTF) is the recent most advanced representation of material surface visual properties. BTF specifies the changes of its visual appearance due to varying illumination and viewing angles. Such a function might be represented by thousands of images of given material surface. Original data cannot be used due to its size and some compression is necessary. This pap...

Multi-Sensor Scene Modeling Using Statistical Models for Bidirectional Texture Functions

This paper presents a novel approach to multi-sensor statistical modeling of bi-directional texture functions (BTF). Our proposed BTF modeling approach is based on (1) conducting an analytical study that relates a sensor resolution to the size and shape of elements forming material surface, (2) developing a robotic system for laboratory BTF data acquisition, (3) researching an application of th...

Rapid Material Appearance Acquisition Using Consumer Hardware

A photo-realistic representation of material appearance can be achieved by means of bidirectional texture function (BTF) capturing a material's appearance for varying illumination, viewing directions, and spatial pixel coordinates. BTF captures many non-local effects in material structure such as inter-reflections, occlusions, shadowing, or scattering. The acquisition of BTF data is usually tim...
