چکیده

We present an optimized algorithm to estimate from shifted stellar spectra the variations of radial velocity caused by a rotating planet. This algorithm is based on a rigorous approach in the spectral Fourier space that uses a weighted analysis of the cross spectrum phase between the high resolution spectra of the object and an appropriate reference. We give a simple method to calculate the best value of the stellar radial velocity in the presence of photon noise from a non linear least square fit, and we derive a formal expression for the velocity error. We show experimentally that the Fourier approach gives much better results than the classical cross-correlation technique.

The planet search program at the ESO Coudé Echelle spectrometer I. Data modeling technique and radial velocity precision tests

We present the modeling technique we apply to analyse data of the ESO Coudé Echelle Spectrometer (CES) planet search program, in order to obtain high precision stellar radial velocity (RV) measurements. The detection of the Doppler reflex motion of a star due to an orbiting planet has so far been the most successful method to discover planetary companions to solar-type stars. The first extrasol...

Detection and Characterization of Extrasolar Planets through Doppler Spectroscopy

Over 300 extrasolar planets have been found since 1992, showing that planetary systems are common and exhibit an outstanding variety of characteristics. As the number of detections grows and as models of planet formation progress to account for the existence of these new worlds, statistical studies and confrontations of observation with theory allow to progressively unravel the key processes un...

Status and Prospects of Planetary Transit Searches: Hot Jupiters Galore

The first transiting extrasolar planet, orbiting HD 209458, was a Doppler wobble planet before its transits were discovered with a 10 cm CCD camera. Wide-angle CCD cameras, by monitoring in parallel the light curves of tens of thousands of stars, should find hot Jupiter transits much faster than the Doppler wobble method. The discovery rate could easily rise by a factor 10. The sky holds perhap...

The Significance of the Sodium Detection in the Extrasolar Planet HD 209458 b Atmosphere

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) detection of an extra-solar planet atmosphere in 2001 was a landmark step forward for the characterization of extrasolar planets. HST detected the trace element sodium, via the neutral atomic resonance doublet at 593 nm, in the tran-siting extrasolar giant planet HD 209458 b. In this paper I discuss the significance of this first ever extrasolar planet atmospher...

Phase-dependent Properties of Extrasolar Planet Atmospheres

Recently the Spitzer Space Telescope observed the transiting extrasolar planets, TrES-1 and HD209458b. These observations have provided the first estimates of the day side thermal flux from two extrasolar planets orbiting Sun-like stars. In this paper, synthetic spectra from atmospheric models are compared to these observations. The day-night temperature difference is explored and phasedependen...
