Descriptional complexity measures of context-free languages

چکیده

In [2], [3] and [4] several measures of descriptional complexity of context-free grammars (cfg's) and context-free languages (cfl's) have been investigated, most of them having the following properties: 1. The corresponding hierarchy of complexity classes of languages over two-letter alphabets is infinite. 2. The basic algorithmic problems are undecidable. (For example, the problems to determine the complexity of a language generated by a given grammar, to decide whether the given grammar is minimal or to construct an equivalent minimal grammar.) In the present paper an attempt is made to investigate measures which seem to be simpler from two points of view. Over a fixed alphabet they induce a finite hierarchy of languages, and to determine the complexity of a grammar only a part of the grammar has to be considered. In spite of this for most of these new measures the basic algorithmic problems remain to be undecidable.

Descriptional Complexity of Context-Free Grammar Forms

Csuhaj-Vajh, E. and A. Kelemenovi, Descriptional complexity of context-free grammar forms, Theoretical Computer Science 112 (1993) 277-289. Descriptional complexity aspects of grammar forms are studied. It is shown that grammatical complexity measures HEI,q, LEV,<, VAR,<, PROD,< and DEP., related to any appropriate infinite class ‘8 of grammars are unbounded on the infinite class of languages d...

Parikh's Theorem and Descriptional Complexity

This thesis was carried out in the Laboratorio di Linguaggi e Combinatoria (LIN.COM), at the Dipartimento di Informatica e Comunicazione, Università degli Studi di Milano. The thesis deals with some topics in the theory of formal languages, and specifically with the theory of context-free languages and the study of theirs descriptional complexity. The descriptional complexity of a formal struct...

Enumeration of Context-Free Languages and Related Structures

In this paper, we consider the enumeration of context-free languages. In particular, for any reasonable descriptional complexity measure for context-free grammars, we demonstrate that the exact quantity of context-free languages of size is uncomputable. Nevertheless, we are able to give upper and lower bounds on the number of such languages. We also generalize our results to enumerate predicate...

On the size complexity of hybrid networks of evolutionary processors

The goal of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to survey in a systematic and uniform way the main results regarding the size descriptional complexity measures of hybrid networks of evolutionary processors as generating devices. Secondly, we improve some results about the size measure, prove that it is connected, and discuss the possibility of computing this measure for regular and context-free lan...

Descriptional Succinctness of Some Grammatical Formalisms for Natrual Language

We investigate the problem of describing languages compactly in different grammatical formalisms for natural languages. In particular, the problem is studied from the point of view of some newly developed natural language formalisms like linear control grammars (LCGs) and tree adjoining grammars (TAGs); these formalisms not only generate non-context-free languages that capture a wide variety of...
