چکیده

Haematogenous contamination of cemented total knee replacements with an anaerobic microorganism, Propionibacterium acnes, was studied in rabbits. Seven weeks after operation the bacteria were injected intravenously and seven weeks after this bacterial challenge the experimental bacterial strain was cultured from 50 per cent of the artificial joints. Bacterial growth at the prosthesis was not correlated to loosening. The results ifiustrate that anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria are also important in haematogenous infection of the total joint replacement.

Determination of antibiotic susceptibility and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the Propionibacterium acnes to the prevalent antibiotics in the treatment of Acne vulgaris

ABSTRACTPropionibacterium acnes is propounded as one of the significant factors in occurrence of acne. Today, due to development of the antibiotic resistance, most of the acne treatments are faced with failure. In order to determine the antibiotic resistance of the P.acnes strains isolated from the patients with acne, this research has been carried out. 70 samples collected using microbial cult...

A role for Propionibacterium acnes in post-operative orthopedic implant infections

In the US annually there are 600,000 joint prostheses and 2,000,000 fracture-fixation devices surgically implanted with an average rate of infection of 2% and 5% respectively for primary insertion. Infected orthopedic hardware is most successfully cured by a combination of prolonged antibiotics and surgical replacement, sometimes involving a 2-step operative procedure that incurs increased...

Optimization of periprosthetic culture for diagnosis of Propionibacterium acnes prosthetic joint infection.

Propionibacterium acnes is increasingly recognized as an important agent of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). However, the optimum culture conditions for recovery of this organism from PJI specimens have not been determined. By applying a prolonged 28-day culture incubation to all periprosthetic specimens received for bacterial culture from 198 revision arthroplasty procedures, we retrospective...
