We consider the approximation properties of quadrilateral finite element spaces of vector fields defined by the Piola transform, extending results previously obtained for scalar approximation. The finite element spaces are constructed starting with a given finite dimensional space of vector fields on a square reference element, which is then transformed to a space of vector fields on each convex quadrilateral element via the Piola transform associated to a bilinear isomorphism of the square onto the element. For affine isomorphisms, a necessary and sufficient condition for approximation of order r + 1 in L2 is that each component of the given space of functions on the reference element contain all polynomial functions of total degree at most r. In the case of bilinear isomorphisms, the situation is more complicated and we give a precise characterization of what is needed for optimal order L2-approximation of the function and of its divergence. As applications, we demonstrate degradation of the convergence order on quadrilateral meshes as compared to rectangular meshes for some standard finite element approximations of H(div). We also derive new estimates for approximation by quadrilateral Raviart–Thomas elements (requiring less regularity) and propose a new quadrilateral finite element space which provides optimal order approximation in H(div). Finally, we demonstrate the theory with numerical computations of mixed and least squares finite element approximations of the solution of Poisson’s equation.

Hexahedral H(div) and H(curl) Finite Elements

We study the approximation properties of some finite element subspaces of H(div; Ω) andH(curl ; Ω) defined on hexahedral meshes in three dimensions. This work extends results previously obtained for quadrilateral H(div; Ω) finite elements and for quadrilateral scalar finite element spaces. The finite element spaces we consider are constructed starting from a given finite dimensional space of ve...

Mixed finite element methods for general quadrilateral grids

We study a new mixed finite element of lowest order for general quadrilateral grids which gives optimal order error in the H(div)-norm. This new element is designed so that the H(div)-projection Ph satisfiesr Ph = Phdiv. A rigorous optimal order error estimate is carried out by proving a modified version of the Bramble–Hilbert lemma for vector variables. We show that a local H(div)-projection r...

Two Families of H(div) Mixed Finite Elements on Quadrilaterals of Minimal Dimension

We develop two families of mixed finite elements on quadrilateral meshes for approximating (u, p) solving a second order elliptic equation in mixed form. Standard Raviart–Thomas (RT) and Brezzi–Douglas–Marini (BDM) elements are defined on rectangles and extended to quadrilaterals using the Piola transform, which are well-known to lose optimal approximation of ∇ · u. Arnold–Boffi–Falk spaces rec...

Torsion Analysis of High-Rise Buildings using Quadrilateral Panel Elements with Drilling D.O.F.s

Generally, the finite element method is a powerful procedure for analysis of tall buildings. Yet, it should be noted that there are some problems in the application of many finite elements to the analysis of tall building structures. The presence of artificial flexure and parasitic shear effects in many lower order plane stress and membrane elements, cause the numerical procedure to converge in...

An Enhanced Finite Element method for Two Dimensional Linear Viscoelasticity using Complex Fourier Elements

In this paper, the finite element analysis of two-dimensional linear viscoelastic problems is performed using quadrilateral complex Fourier elements and, the results are compared with those obtained by quadrilateral classic Lagrange elements. Complex Fourier shape functions contain a shape parameter which is a constant unknown parameter adopted to enhance approximation’s accuracy. Since the iso...
