Face Selectivity Properties of Monkey Temporal Cortical Neurons Predicted by Computer Vision

چکیده
In this issue of Neuron, Ohayon et al. (2012) utilize fMRI-guided single-cell recordings to demonstrate the importance of contrast polarity features for face-selective responses in macaque temporal cortex, as predicted by a computer vision face detection algorithm.

Maps of complex motion selectivity in the superior temporal cortex of the alert macaque monkey: a double-label 2-deoxyglucose study.
The superior temporal sulcus (STS) of the macaque monkey contains multiple visual areas. Many neurons within these regions respond selectively to motion direction and to more complex motion patterns, such as expansion, contraction and rotation. Single-unit recording and optical recording studies in MT/MST suggest that cells with similar tuning properties are clustered into columns extending thr...
متن کاملRole of low and high spatial frequencies in the face-selective responses of neurons in the cortex in the superior temporal sulcus in the monkey.
There are neurons in the cortex in the anterior part of the superior temporal sulcus of the macaque monkey with visual responses selective for faces. One aim of the present study was to analyze further the information which leads them to respond, by measuring their responses to parametrically filtered stimuli. The responses of 32 such single neurons were measured to faces which were digitized, ...

While early cortical visual areas contain fine scale spatial organization of neuronal properties, such as orientation preference, the spatial organization of higher-level visual areas is less well understood. The fMRI demonstration of face-preferring regions in human ventral cortex and monkey inferior temporal cortex ("face patches") raises the question of how neural selectivity for faces is or...
متن کاملThe role of V1 surround suppression in MT motion integration.
Neurons in the primate extrastriate cortex are highly selective for complex stimulus features such as faces, objects, and motion patterns. One explanation for this selectivity is that neurons in these areas carry out sophisticated computations on the outputs of lower-level areas such as primary visual cortex (V1), where neuronal selectivity is often modeled in terms of linear spatiotemporal fil...

Szarowicz and Chris Hillman for excellent animal care. Abstract The temporal properties of disparity-sensitive neurons place important temporal constraints on stereo matching. We examined these constraints by measuring the responses of disparity-selective neurons in striate cortex of awake behaving monkeys to random dot stereograms that contained interocular delays. Disparity selectivity was gr...
