چکیده

Simulation/Optimization (S/0) models can greatly simplify the process of designing remediation systems for contaminated groundwater. We describe some technical aspects of using S/0 models and possible S/0 model formulations for groundwater remediation design. We: discuss some S/0 model optimization algorithms; illustrate simple optimization problem solution; describe two real-world S/0 model applications; and demonstr·ate S/0 model application under uncertainty.

Groundwater Model Approximation with Artificial Neural Network for Selecting Optimum Pumping Strategy for Plume Removal

Cleanup of contaminated aquifers by pumping and injection is one of the commonly used approaches for the remediation of groundwater contamination. Contaminant transport travel time in groundwater can be calculated using a method called ‘particle-tracking’ based on advection. The travel time of the contaminants is a highly non-linear and nonconvex function of pumping/injection rates and well loc...

Optimal System Design of In-Situ Bioremediation Using Parallel Recombinative Simulated Annealing

We present a simulation/optimization model combining optimization with BIOPLUME II simulation for optimizing in-situ bioremediation system design. In-situ bioremediation of contaminated groundwater has become widely accepted because of its cost-effective ability to achieve satisfactory cleanup. We use parallel recombinative simulated annealing to search for an optimal design and apply the BIOPL...

A reactor model for pulsed pumping groundwater remediation.

A hybrid in situ bioremediation/pulsed pumping strategy has been developed to cost effectively remediate a carbon tetrachloride plume in Schoolcraft, Michigan. The pulsed pumping system uses a line of alternating injection and extraction wells perpendicular to the direction of natural groundwater flow. The wells pump periodically to clean the recirculation zone between adjacent wells. During th...

A Geostatistical Data Assimilation Approach for Estimating Groundwater Plume Distributions from Multiple Monitoring Events

Knowledge of the distribution of groundwater contaminant plumes is needed to avoid pumping contaminated water, assess past exposure to contamination, and design remediation schemes to contain or treat the contaminated area. In most field cases, however, contamination is discovered by a small number of fortuitously located wells, and the full distribution of the plume is never known. This paper ...

Ef.ficient Groundwater Remediation System Design Subject to Uncertainty Using Robust Optimization

Many groundwater remediation designs for contaminant plume containment are developed using mathematically based groundwater now models. These mathematical models are most eiTective as predictive tools when the parameters that govern groundwater flow are known with a high degree of certainty. The hydraulic conductivity of an aquifer, however, is uncertain, and so remediation designs developed lI...
