Predictors for Neurologic Complications of Bacterial Meningitis in Children in Kosovo

Results. Of the 277 children who were treated for bacterial meningitis, neurologic complications developed in 60 patients (22%) and 15 children died, yielding an overall mortality rate of 5%. The most important predictors for neurologic complications in pediatric patients with bacterial meningitis were prehospital seizures and their recurrence >24 hours after admisssion (RR 6.7 and RR 6.2, 95% CI), a large decrease in CSF leukocyte count (<100 cells/mm3 ) after 48 hours (RRs 4.0, 95% CI), age less than 12 months (RR 3.7, 95% CI), the presence of neurologic deficit (RR 3.3, 95% CI) and altered mental status (RR 2.7, 95% CI).
