چکیده

Editors’ Note: In reference to “Low-frequency stimulation of STN-DBS reduces aspiration and freezing of gait in patients with PD,” Dr. Sidiropoulos suggests several avenues of further investigation including low-frequency stimulation to treat dysarthria, the effects of different stimulation location and parameters, and the duration of clinical benefit. Authors Xie et al. respond. Drs. Lattanzi and Silvestrini and author Anderson discuss intensive blood pressure lowering and blood pressure variability in the acute management of intracerebral hemorrhage. —Megan Alcauskas, MD, and Robert C. Low-frequency stimulation of STN-DBS reduces aspiration and freezing of gait in patients with PD.

OBJECTIVES To study whether 60-Hz stimulation, compared with routine 130 Hz, improves swallowing function and freezing of gait (FOG) in patients with Parkinson disease (PD) who undergo bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS). METHODS We studied 7 patients with PD who experienced FOG that persisted despite routine 130-Hz stimulation and dopaminergic medication. Each pa...

The effect of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the acoustic and prosodic features in patients with Parkinson’s disease: A study protocol for the first trial on Iranian patients

Background: The effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the voice features in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is controversial. No study has evaluated the voice features of PD underwent STN-DBS by the acoustic, perceptual, and patient-based assessments comprehensively. Furthermore, there is no study to investigate prosodic features before and after DBS in PD. The curren...

STN-DBS frequency effects on freezing of gait in advanced Parkinson disease.

BACKGROUND Severe gait disturbances and freezing episodes (frequently resistant to optimal dopaminergic treatment) often appear in advanced Parkinson disease (PD). Even several years after initiation, high-frequency subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) is still very effective for controlling segmental symptoms. However, there are no long-term data on the management of gait disor...

Anatomical situation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) from midcommissural point (MCP) in Parkinson\'s disease patients underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS): an MRI targeting study

Abstract   Introduction: It is demonstrated that the degree of clinical improvement in   Parkinson's disease (PD) achieved by deep brain stimulation (DBS) is largely dependent   on the accuracy of lead placement. In addition, individual variability in the   situation of subthalamic nucleus (STN) is responsible for spatial inter-individual   fluctuations of the real patient's target.   Objecti...

RESEARCH STUDY Controlling Gait Coordination with STN-DBS Improves Freezing of Gait in Parkinson’s disease

Background of the Study Freezing of gait (FOG), or a sudden, brief inability to generate normal stepping movements, is a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease (PD) that affects more than 50% of patients with PD. However, unlike most Parkinson’s symptoms, FOG is resistant to PD medications and the effects of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS; or therapy that sends electricity t...
