چکیده

In a range of contexts, one comes across processes resembling inference, but where input propositions are not in general included among outputs, and the operation is not in any way reversible. Examples arise in contexts of conditional obligations, goals, ideals, preferences, actions, and beliefs. Our purpose is to develop a theory of such input/output operations. Four are singled out: simpleminded, basic (making intelligent use of disjunctive inputs), simple-minded reusable (in which outputs may be recycled as inputs), and basic reusable. They are defined semantically and characterised by derivation rules, as well as in terms of relabeling procedures and modal operators. Their behaviour is studied on both semantic and syntactic levels.

Frederik Van De Putte Adaptive Logic Characterizations of Input / Output Logic

We translate unconstrained and constrained input/output logics as introduced by Makinson and van der Torre to modal logics, using adaptive logics for the constrained case. The resulting reformulation has some additional benefits. First, we obtain a prooftheoretic (dynamic) characterization of input/output logics. Second, we demonstrate that our framework naturally gives rise to useful variants ...

The Logic of Normative Systems

Logical architectures combine several logics into a more complex logical system. In this paper we study logical architectures using input/output operations corresponding to the functionality of logical components. We propose a logic of normative systems, based on an architecture of counts-as conditionals, institutional constraints, obligations and permissions. For counts-as conditionals and ins...

Consistency Constraints for Input/Output Logic: A Comparative Review

In a separate paper, we developed a general theory of such processes when they are applied without ...

"Sing and Dance!" - Input/Output Logics without Weakening

Makinson and van der Torre [14] introduce a number of input/output (I/O) logics to reason about conditional norms. The key idea is to make obligations relative to a given set of conditional norms. The meaning of the normative concepts is, then, given in terms of a set of procedures yielding outputs for inputs. Using the same methodology, Stolpe [20,21] has developed some more I/O logics to incl...
