چکیده

Channel bandwidth is very scarce resource in wireless networks. However, the way in which IEEE 802.11 DCF uses random backoff time to resolve the channel contention leads to inefficient utilization of this scarce resource. Especially in highly loaded network, the portion of channel bandwidth wasted in idle or collision state is significantly high. Prior work proposes to dynamically tune the parameters of IEEE 802.11 to achieve optimized performance. In this report, we propose a different mechanism which “pipelines” the stage of contention resolution and stage of packet transmission so that the time period in which channel is in idle or collision status is reduced. The protocol performance has been studied using simulations. The promising result is that the utilization of channel bandwidth can be close to peak performance even in a highly loaded network.

A New Medium Access Control Protocol for TDD Mode Wideband CDMA Wireless Local Area Networks

It is well known that TDD mode wideband CDMA is particularly suited for wireless local area networks (LANs). In this paper a medium access control (MAC) protocol is proposed for wireless multimedia LANs that are based on TDD mode wideband CDMA. In order to minimize interference experienced by a packet and to satisfy bit error rates (BERs) of multimedia traffic, a minimum-power allocation algori...

The One-Sender-Multiple-Receiver Technique and Downlink Packet Scheduling in Wireless LANs

In this paper, we study the One-Sender-MultipleReceiver (OSMR) transmission technique, which allows a sender to send to multiple receivers on the same frequency simultaneously by utilizing multiple antennas at the sender. OSMR has the potential to significantly improve the downlink performance of wireless LANs, because with OSMR, the Access Point (AP) can send distinct packets to multiple compu...

Enhancing Throughput over Wireless LANs Using Channel State Dependent Packet Scheduling

Unlike wired networks, packets transmitted on wireless channels are often subject to burst errors which cause back to back packet losses. Most wireless LAN link layer protocols recover from packet losses by retransmitting lost segments. When the wireless channel is in a burst error state, most retransmission attempts fail, thereby causing poor utilization of the wireless channel. Furthermore, i...

Using Channel State Dependent Packet Scheduling to Improve Tcp Throughput over Wireless Lans P. Bhagwat Et Al. / Csdp Scheduling over Wlans 2

In recent years, a variety of mobile computers equipped with wireless communication devices have become popular. These computers use applications and protocols , originally developed for wired desktop hosts, to communicate over wireless channels. Unlike wired networks, packets transmitted on wireless channels are often subject to burst errors which cause back to back packet losses. In this pape...

Achieving proportional delay differentiation in wireless LAN via cross-layer scheduling

Providing service differentiation in wireless networks has attracted much attention in recent research. Existing studies so far have focused on the design of differentiated media access algorithms. Some quality of service (QoS) metrics, such as queueing delay cannot be completely addressed by these approaches. Moreover, without a formalized service differentiation goal that quantifies the outco...
