First Record of the Seagrass Wrasse, Novaculoides Macrolepidotus (actinopterygii: Perciformes: Labridae), from Reunion Island, Southwestern Indian Ocean, with a Brief Description of Its Colour Pattern Variation, Escape and Reproductive Behaviour

چکیده
Background. Little is known about the seagrass wrasse, Novaculoides macrolepidotus. In January 2012 it was recorded for the fi rst time from Reunion Island. As its population increased over the years, fi eld observations were made on colour pattern variation, escape and reproductive behaviour. Regarding a cryptic and poorly documented species, these observations, despite their anecdotal form, need to be made available to ichthyologists. The aim of the present paper was to present this fi rst record with associated fi eld observations and to increase interest of ichthyologists in this species. Material and methods. Observations were made while snorkelling on the west coast of Reunion Island on the fringing reef of L’Ermitage (district of Saint Gilles les Bains). The fi rst specimen was observed on 28 January 2012 in a monospecifi c seagrass bed of Syringodium isoetifolium. Later surveys on the same reef between 2012 and 2016 provided additional observations of the species. Results. Colour pattern and body proportions of the fi rst observed specimen well agree with N. macrolepidotus as described by Randall and Earle (2004). Subsequently observed specimens expressed a previously undescribed colour pattern variation. Escape and reproductive behaviour was observed and are discussed. Conclusion. A reproducing population of N. macrolepidotus has apparently established at Reunion Island. The present fi eld observations of the behaviour of this species should be followed by more detailed ethological studies.

Shape variation of the Indian Ocean slender mudskipper, Scartelaos tenuis (Day, 1876) from the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea (Gobioidei: Gobiidae)
The shape diversity among populations of Scartelaos tenuis (Day 1876) from five stations (194 specimens) in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz (Qeshm Island), and the Sea of Oman were investigated. The shape variation was assessed by geometric morphometrics, using 14 morphological landmarks. The two sexes were not distinguishable by the shape. Fish samples were classified into two distinct grou...
متن کاملNorthernmost record of a poorly known tuskfish, Choerodon margaritiferus (Perciformes: Labridae), from southern Japan, and first description of a female.
We describe 5 specimens of Choerodon margaritiferus Fowler and Bean, 1928 (94.5-107.0 mm standard length, 1 male and 4 females) collected near Okinawa Island, southern Japan. This is the northernmost record of this species and the first record of it in Japanese waters; until now, C. margaritiferus was recorded only from the western central Pacific. This species was originally described on the b...

A new species of the fish family Labridae, Suezichthys rosenblatti, is described from specimens collected at Isla San Felix, Isla Juan Fernandez and Isla San Ambrosio, off the coast of Chile. Suezichthys rosenblatti is distinct in having a combination of 11 dorsal fin soft rays and 11 anal fin soft rays. It falls in the group of species that has 1½ scale rows above the lateral line and lack a s...
متن کاملContinuous movement behavior of humpback whales during the breeding season in the southwest Indian Ocean: on the road again!
BACKGROUND Humpback whales are known to undertake long-distance migration between feeding and breeding sites, but their movement behavior within their breeding range is still poorly known. Satellite telemetry was used to investigate movement of humpback whales during the breeding season and provide further understanding of the breeding ecology and sub-population connectivity within the southwes...
