Preliminary Investigations in Automatic Recognition of English Sentences Uttered by Italian Children

چکیده
This paper reports on a initial research activity in the area of non-native children’s speech recognition that was carried out by exploiting two children databases, one consisting of speech collected from native English children, the other one consisting of English sentences read by Italian learners of English in the same age range of the native speakers. By exploiting the corpus of native speech a baseline speech recognizer was trained for British English. Recognition results achieved for native speakers were compared with those achieved for Italian children uttering the same English texts. Word error rates achieved for Italian children were 100%600% higher than those achieved for English children of the same age. Adapting baseline acoustic models by using a small amount of nonnative speech from a group of Italian learners of English, resulted in a great improvement in recognition performance on non-native speech.

متن کاملComprehension improvement using local confidence measure: towards automatic transcription for classroom
We conducted a preliminary study to evaluate the contribution of confidence measure for improving the comprehension of an automatic transcription. The future framework is deaf children studying in a standard school classroom. We defined local confidence measures that can be estimated as soon as possible without waiting for the recognition process to be completed. We the defined different modali...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation Test of an Automatic Segmentation System for Italian and American-english Continuous Speech.
We present in this paper an automatic system for the segmentation of continuos speech. The segmentation algorithm has been implemented modifying the CDHMM system RES (Recognition Experimental System) for the automatic recognition of continuos speech. The segmentation task is performed as a phonetic recognition constrained by the grammar model built only on the exact sequence of uttered phonemes...
متن کاملPersistence of prosodic features between dialectal and standard Italian utterances in six sub-varieties of a region of southern Italy (salento): first assessments of the results of a recognition test and an instrumental analysis
The aim of the work to be reported here is to attempt to verify that some dialectal varieties of a restricted area show sensible differences in their prosody and that normally the same differences characterise the prosodic system of speakers when performing sentences in Italian. To verify these hypothesis two kind of experiment were carried out: a perceptual recognition test based on sentences ...
متن کاملA new Italian dataset of parallel acoustic and articulatory data
In this paper we introduce a new Italian dataset consisting of simultaneous recordings of continuous speech and trajectories of important vocal tract articulators (i.e. tongue, lips, incisors) tracked by Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA). It includes more than 500 sentences uttered in citation condition by three speakers, one male (cnz) and two females (lls, olm), for approximately 2 hours o...
