چکیده

Microwave oscillator design is based on the principle of generating a negative resistance to compensate for the losses of the resonator. Several circuit combinations, including oneand two-port oscillators, are possible. In this discussion, we will first evaluate the conditions of oscillation for the Colpitts and Clapp-Gouriet oscillator. We will then evaluate a 19-GHz SiGe-based oscillator by assuming values, backed up by available S parameters and dc I-V curves, that we assigned to the nonlinear BFP520 model. So far it has been difficult to obtain complete documentation on modeling for the SiGe transistors, but our approximation appears to be justified. Next, we will evaluate a ceramic-resonator-based oscillator and show its performance. Going up to higher frequencies, we will introduce a 47-GHz lumped-resonator oscillator and a VCO at the same frequency that uses GaAsFETs as varactors. In all cases, we will give a thorough treatment of the circuits and their performance.

Investigation and Design of Low Phase Noise and Wideband Microwave VCOs

This thesis studied the design techniques of low phase noise and wideband microwave voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) used for point-to-point radio applications. First, basic oscillator theories as well as different technologies were reviewed. Then two Cband MMIC VCOs were designed in a commercial InGaP HBT foundry process with different topologies, namely the balanced Colpitts and the bala...

A Design and Analysis of High Performance Voltage Controlled Oscillators

The voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) is one of the most important building blocks in modern communication applications such as microprocessor clock generation, wired and wireless communications, system synchronization, and frequency synthesis. The design of high performance VCOs has been increasingly more important and still is an active research area. Research on VCOs for the past decade ha...

Cost-Effective VCOs Replace Power-Hungry YIGs

Phase noise is the curse of many a communications system, and one of the key performance parameters that most oscillators strive to minimize. System designers have long recognized the yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) oscillator for its broadband, lownoise, high-frequency capabilities. But YIG sources are also power hungry and physically large. The mechanical design, with a YIG sphere mounted in the ai...

Silicon-Based Distributed Voltage-Controlled Oscillators

Distributed voltage-controlled oscillators (DVCOs) are presented as a new approach to the design of silicon VCOs at microwave frequencies. In this paper, the operation of distributed oscillators is analyzed and the general oscillation condition is derived, resulting in analytical expressions for the frequency and amplitude. Two tuning techniques for DVCOs are demonstrated, namely, the inherent-...

A Phase Noise Reduction Technique in LC Cross-coupled Oscillators with Adjusting Transistors Operating Regions

In this paper, an intuitive analysis of a phase noise reduction technique is done, and then a modified structure is proposed to achieve higher phase noise reduction than the original one. This method reduces the impact of noise sources on the phase noise by decreasing closed-loop gain in zero-crossings points and moving this high closed-loop gain to the non-zero-crossings points. This reduction...
