چکیده
The gingiva and associated soft tissues of the periodontium may be enlarged in response to various interactions between the host and the environment. Although such enlargement usually represents an inflammatory response to bacterial plaque (91), increased susceptibility as a result of systemic factors or conditions should always be considered during the course of patient evaluation (139). Systemically related gingival enlargements include, but are not limited to, scurvy, leukemia, puberty, pregnancy, multi-system syndromes and selected drugs and/or agents (139, 182). In addition, fibrotic gingival enlargement has been reported and is believed to be the result of a genetic predisposition (such as hereditary or familial gingival enlargement); however, an idiopathic variant that has not been associated with genetic linkage or cause has also been described. Since the fibrotic gingival enlargements occur infrequently, minimal interest has been shown in the recent scientific literature, except for case reports and associated histological observations (138, 139, 182). Of the predisposing factors associated with disproportionate, disfiguring and functionally compromising overgrowth of gingival tissues, selected anticonvulsant drugs, calcium channel blockers and a potent immunosuppressant (cyclosporin A) have generated the most investigative attention in the scientific community. Unfortunately, the underlying pathogenic mechanism that mediates gingival overgrowth in affected individuals remains undefined despite intense clinical and laboratory investigation. The purpose of this chapter is to review gingival overgrowth and its association with anticonvulsant agents, calcium channel blockers and cyclosporin A. Discussion of the respective drugs and their association with gingival overgrowth will include pharmacokinetics, clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, histological characteristics and approaches to prevention and treatment based on current knowledge and investigative observations.

Gingival overgrowth is a drug-associated side effect occurs in pediatric patients. Phenytoin, cyclosporine, calcium channel blockers, and amphetamine are primary drugs that can cause gingival enlargement in children. Pediatric patients are more prone to drug-associated gingival overgrowth rather than adults. Gingival overgrowth may cause functional, phonetic, and nutritional difficulties, and m...

The purpose of this paper is to review the causes and describe the appearance of drug-induced gingival overgrowth, so that dental hygienists are better prepared to manage such patients. Gingival overgrowth is caused by three categories of drugs: anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, and calcium channel blockers. Some authors suggest that the prevalence of gingival overgrowth induced by chronic m...

INTRODUCTION Gingival overgrowth has been linked to multiple factors such as adverse drug effects, inflammation, neoplastic processes, and hereditary gingival fibromatosis. Drug-induced gingival overgrowth is a well-established adverse event. In early stages, this gingival enlargement is usually located in the area of the interdental papilla. Histologically, there is an increase in the differen...

Gingival overgrowth (GO) is a side effect associated with some distinct classes of drugs, such as anticonvulsants, immunosuppressant, and calcium channel blockers. GO is characterized by the accumulation of extracellular matrix in gingival connective tissues, particularly collagenous components, with varying degrees of inflammation. One of the main drugs associated with GO is the antiepileptic ...

Statement of Problem: Gingival overgrowth is a side effect commonly induced by Cyclosporin treatment. The effects of Azithromycin, a macrolidic antibiotic, has been focused on gingival enlargement treatment induced by cyclosporine in numerous articles. Purpose: The goal of the present study was to survey the effects of systemic Azithromycin in the treatment of gingival overgrowth induced by cyc...
