چکیده

We formulate a novel host parasite model to study the dynamics of the outbreak of the gypsy moths. Assuming a Ricker dynamics for the host population and an infestation that takes place after the growth limitations take effect in the plant dynamics, a two dimensional discrete model of the leaf mass and the gypsy moths mass is constructed. The parameter space is determined by the growth rate of the host population and a parameter describing the damage done by a gypsy moth. Bifurcation curves in that parameter space are presented. Bistability and a crises of a strange attractor suggest two control strategies: Reducing the population of the gypsy moths under some threshold or increasing the growth rate of the plant leaves.

Oak mast seeding as a direct cause of gypsy moth outbreaks?

In our paper (Liebhold et al. 2000) we reviewed the literature on the dynamics of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) populations in North America. This paper highlighted a previously developed hypothesis, namely that gypsy moth outbreaks are caused by decreased rates of predation by small mammal predators as a result of diminished predator populations following years of low mast production by...

Asynchrony between Host Plant and Insects-Defoliator within a Tritrophic System: The Role of Herbivore Innate Immunity

The effects of asynchrony in the phenology of spring-feeding insect-defoliators and their host plants on insects' fitness, as well as the importance of this effect for the population dynamics of outbreaking species of insects, is a widespread and well-documented phenomenon. However, the spreading of this phenomenon through the food chain, and especially those mechanisms operating this spreading...

Pathogen-Driven Outbreaks in Forest Defoliators Revisited: Building Models from Experimental Data.

Models of outbreaks in forest-defoliating insects are typically built from a priori considerations and tested only with long time series of abundances. We instead present a model built from experimental data on the gypsy moth and its nuclear polyhedrosis virus, which has been extensively tested with epidemic data. These data have identified key details of the gypsy moth-virus interaction that a...
