Stacked passives in Turkish
نویسندگان
چکیده
is paper deals with ‘stacked passives’ in Turkish, an impersonal passive construction with two occurrences of passive morphology and two instances of argument reduction. e aim will be to adequately capture the fact that each instance of passivization seems to be mirrored by a morphological reex on the verb. I will adopt the theory of passivization in Müller (2014), who assumes that passivization involves merging and subsequently removing the external argument from the structure. e analysis of double passivization will involve assuming two Voice projections above vP, each headed by a passive sux. is approach will allow us to capture the relevant data for Turkish and it will also be shown how this approach extends to another case of double passivization in Lithuanian as well as antipassive constructions.

On-line Processing of Passives in L1 and L2 Children
Research on first language (L1) acquisition has shown that typically developing children acquire a large part of morpho-syntax by the age of 4 (Guasti, 2002). Similarly, studies investigating how children process morpho-syntactic information have revealed that by the same age, their processing routines do not differ from those used by adults (Clahsen & Felser, 2006). However, there is one struc...
متن کاملEvent passives
Event passives are verbal passives of causative predcates which involve only a causing event and no agent. Studying this kind of passive, I critically review the popular claim in research on passives and implicit arguments that verbal passives semantically always include an implicit argument (Bhatt & Pancheva 2006). I contend that this view is not very reasonable from a semantic perspective. Mo...
متن کاملThe Effect of Isolated vs. Combined Processing Instruction and Output-Based Instruction on the Learning of English Passives
The studies on the merits of processing instruction (PI) and output-based instruction (OI) have mostly treated the two approaches as mutually exclusive. To address the potentials of combining interpretation and production activities, this research compared the two isolated approaches of PI and OI with two combined approaches in which processing and output tasks were used in two opposite orders ...
متن کاملChildren’s Passives and Their Resulting Interpretation*
All studies that have examined children’s comprehension of passives using both actional (e.g. wash) and psychological (e.g. see) verbs in English have found a significant interaction of voice (active vs. passive) and verb type (actional vs. psychological), with psychological passives being answered most poorly. Accounts differ as to whether a grammatical impairment with passive syntax underlies...
متن کاملPassives in first language acquisition: What causes the delay?
The passive construction is a late acquisition in child language. In this paper I evaluate the claim that difficulty with noncanonical semantics, rather than non-mature subject-object A-chains, underlie young children’s poor performance on the passive. In a series of truth-value judgment tasks, 4and 5-year-old English-speaking children were tested on their comprehension of matrix passives and p...
