Topology Change in (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity

چکیده
In (2+1)-dimensional general relativity, the path integral for a manifold M can be expressed in terms of a topological invariant, the Ray-Singer torsion of a flat bundle over M . For some manifolds, this makes an explicit computation of transition amplitudes possible. In this paper, we evaluate the amplitude for a simple topology-changing process. We show that certain amplitudes for spatial topology change are nonvanishing—in fact, they can be infrared divergent—but that they are infinitely suppressed relative to similar topology-preserving amplitudes. ∗email: [email protected] †email: [email protected]

Topology Change and Nonperturbative Instability of Black Holes in Quantum Gravity
Topology change in quantum gravity is considered. An exact wave function of the Universe is calculated for topological Chern-Simons 2+1 dimensional gravity. This wave function occurs as the effect of a quantum anomaly which leads to the induced gravity. We find that the wave function depends universally on the topology of the two-dimensional space. Indeed, the property of the ground state wave ...
متن کاملTopology change in (2+1)-dimensional gravity with non-Abelian Higgs field
We study topology change in (2+1)D gravity coupling with non-Abelian SO(2, 1) Higgs field from the point of view of Morse theory. It is shown that the Higgs potential can be identified as a Morse function. The critical points of the latter (i.e. loci of change of the spacetime topology) coincide with zeros of the Higgs field. In these critical points twodimensional metric becomes degenerate, bu...
متن کاملTopology Change and the Emergence of Geometry in Two Dimensional Causal Quantum Gravity
In this thesis we analyze a very simple model of two dimensional quantum gravity based on causal dynamical triangulations (CDT). We present an exactly solvable model which indicates that it is possible to incorporate spatial topology changes in the nonperturbative path integral. It is shown that if the change in spatial topology is accompanied by a coupling constant it is possible to evaluate t...
متن کاملSix Ways to Quantize (2+1)-dimensional Gravity∗
There is an old joke—feel free to adapt it to your local politics—that if you put three socialists together in a room, you’ll end up with four political parties. The same can be said of physicists working on quantum gravity. Quantum gravity is hard, and in the absence of compelling experimental or mathematical guidance, the past forty years of research has given us a remarkable variety of appro...
