Acute common peroneal nerve palsy caused by hemorrhage into a recurrent ganglion

Ganglia were first described by Hippocrates, as `knots of tissue' containing `mucoid flesh' (1). They occur most commonly at the wrist and occasionally at the knee. They usually present with pain and rarely cause compressive neuropathies. Hartwell (2) in 1901 first described peripheral nerve (median nerve) involvement by a ganglion. In 1921, Sultan (3) reported a patient with paralysis of the c...

Pure peroneal intraneural ganglion cyst ascending along the sciatic nerve.

Peroneal nerve entrapment is most commonly seen in the popliteal fossa. It is rarely caused by a ganglion. Intraneural ganglia, although uncommon and seldom cause serious complications, are well recognized and most commonly affect the common peroneal (lateral popliteal) nerve. Ganglionic cysts developing in the sheath of a peripheral nerve or joint capsule may cause compression neuropathy. The ...

Compression of common peroneal nerve caused by an extraneural ganglion cyst mimicking intermittent claudication

Peripheral neuropathies caused by ganglion cysts are rare. They seldom cause serious complications especially in the lower extremities. The case was a 51-year-old woman referred by her physician to the vascular surgeon with diagnosis including intermittent (vascular) claudication and deep venous thrombosis. Primarily vascular surgeon performed a doppler ultrasound of the lower extremity and cal...

Compression neuropathy of the peroneal nerve secondary to a ganglion cyst.

Peripheral neuropathies caused by ganglion cysts are rare, particularly in the lower extremities. The case of a 45-year-old man with a two-month history of foot drop and swelling in the region of the right fibular head is presented. Physical examination and electromyogram studies verified a peroneal nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lobulated, multilocular, cystic-appearing mas...

Common Peroneal Nerve Palsy Secondary to a Proximal Tibiofibular Joint “Ganglion Cyst”—A Case Report and Review of Literature

Although ganglion cysts occur frequently, their presence in the lower extremities is rare and they seldom cause peripheral nerve compression. There are enumerable case reports of intraneural ganglion involvement with the common peroneal nerve and its branches, the sural nerve, and the posterior tibial nerve but extraneural ganglion sciatic and common peroneal nerve palsy cases are quite rare. O...
