N ational Health Insurance and precautionary saving: evidence from Taiwan
نویسندگان
چکیده
By reducing uncertainty about future medical expenses, comprehensive health insurance can reduce households’ precautionary saving. We examine this effect using Taiwan micro-data spanning the 1995 introduction of National Health Insurance. The effects of National Health Insurance are identified using employment-based variation in prior insurance coverage. Replacement of the households’ prior insurance coverage with National Health Insurance is exogenous to the household, so our estimates are not subject to selection bias. Compared with the preceding government insurance programs, National Health Insurance reduced saving by an average of 8.6–13.7% with the largest effects for households with the smallest saving. 2002 Elsevier B.V. Private medical insurance and saving: evidence from the British Household Panel Survey.
This paper uses the British Household Panel Survey for the years 1996-2000 to investigate the relationship between saving and private medical insurance in the UK. Because the National Health Service (NHS) gives comprehensive health coverage and is generally free at source, one would not expect private medical insurance to crowd-out saving. However, the NHS being characterised by long waiting li...
متن کاملThe impact of the correlation between health expenditure and survival probability on the demand for insurance
This paper studies the effects of health shocks on the demand for health insurance and annuities, along with precautionary saving in a dynamic life-cycle model. I argue that when the health shock can simultaneously increase health expenses and reduce longevity, rational agents would neither fully insure their uncertain health expenses nor fully annuitize their wealth because the correlation bet...
متن کاملIncidental Bequests: Bequest Motives and the Choice to Self-Insure Late-Life Risks∗
Retirees face significant uncertainty about how long they will live and, in many countries, how much costly health care they will require. Yet few buy life annuities or long-term care insurance to insure these risks. Low rates of long-term care insurance coverage are often interpreted as evidence against the importance of bequest motives since failing to buy insurance exposes bequests to signif...
متن کاملIncome Uncertainty and Precautionary Saving: Evidence from Household Rotating Panel Data∗
This paper analyses precautionary saving associated with income risk. I model income dynamics decomposing the innovation into its idiosyncratic, cohort-specific and aggregate components, as in Banks, Blundell and Brugiavini (1999). However, compared to their repeated cross-sections, I show how my rotating panel (the Spanish family expenditure survey) can be exploited to identify the idiosyncrat...
