Bayesian beliefs with stochastic monotonicity: An extension of Machina and Schmeidler
نویسندگان
چکیده
Machina andSchmeidler show that the probabilistic sophistication can be obtained in anAnscombe– Aumann setting without imposing expected utility bymaintaining stochastic monotonicity and adding a new axiom loosely analogous to Savage’s P4. This analogous axiom, however, is very strong. In this note, we obtain probabilistic sophistication using a weaker (and more natural) analog of Savage’s P4. Stochastic monotonicity is sufficient to bridge the gap, where Anscombe and Aumman use independence twice, we use stochastic monotonicity twice. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Probabilistic sophistication and stochastic monotonicity in the Savage framework
Machina and Schmeidler [Machina, M., Schmeidler, D., 1992. A more robust definition of subjective probability. Econometrica 60, 745–780] show that probabilistic sophistication can be obtained in a Savage setting without imposing expected utility by dropping Savage's axiom P2 (sure-thing principle) and strengthening his axiom P4 (weak comparative probability). Their stronger axiom, however, embo...
متن کاملEvent Exchangeability: Probabilistic Sophistication without Continuity or Monotonicity by Chew
Building on the Ramsey–de Finetti idea of event exchangeability, we derive a characterization of probabilistic sophistication without requiring any of the various versions of monotonicity, continuity, or comparative likelihood assumptions imposed by Savage (1954), Machina and Schmeidler (1992), and Grant (1995). Our characterization identifies a unique and finitely-additive subjective probabili...
متن کاملUnbounded probabilistic sophistication
I extend Machina and Schmeidler’s (1992) model of probabilistic sophistication to unbounded uncertain prospects (acts) and derive risk preferences over the induced probability distributions (lotteries) with unbounded support. For example, risk preferences can be derived over normal, exponential, and Poisson families of probability distributions. My extension uses a version of Arrow’s (1970) Mon...
متن کاملA theory of quantifiable beliefs
Building upon the works of Anscombe and Amuann [Ann. Math. Stat. 34 (1963) 199] and Karni and Schmeidler [An expected utility theory for state-dependent preferences. Working Paper 48-80, Foerder Institute for Economic Research, Tel Aviv University], we develop a general axiomatic theory of quantifiable beliefs—a form of probabilistic sophistication that does not preclude state-dependent prefere...
متن کاملFrom Cases to Probabilities — Learning from Data with the Best and the Worst in Mind
We consider a decision-situation characterized by a decision problem, i.e. a set of actions and a set of feasible outcomes and by an information context, i.e. a data-set containing the past performance of (some of) the actions. The decision-maker can express preferences over the choice of an action in a given context. Information contexts which contain a large number of observations and ing obs...
