چکیده
Absrrt7c.r: Althul~gh winter foods o f mallards (Annsplat~rh~t tcos) and wood ducks (Aix sporlscl) have been documented in several studies, 110 stich research has been conducted in nati~ral bottomland hardwood forests in eastern 'Texas. We collected 40 mallards and 78 woocl dticks and san~pleil available foods in eastern Texas during winters 1987-1988 and 1988-89 to study food habits and preferences. Acorns from four oak species comprised >89% and 399% of the diets of mallards ar~d wood ducks, respectively. Nuttall oak (QIICIT'LI,T texrrrra) acorns made up :47% of the diet of each species both years. Prograin PREFER incticateci seeds of decitluous holly ( I l e , ~ (Ieci(It~(z) and willow oak (Q. phellos) acorns were favored by mallards and wood ducks, respectively; preferences overlapped wiclely artlong potential foods, however. Although bottomland systems provide critical habitat for wintering waterfowl, their contributions can be enhanced by applying established silvicultural techniques to encourage desirable oak species. Estimating Waterfowl Densities in a Flooded Forest: a Comparison of Methods
During winter, aerial surveys are used to estimate densities of ducks that occupy open-water habitats. However, such surveys are ineffective for sampling forest-dwelling species, especially Aix sponsa (Wood Ducks), Anas platyrhynchos (Mallards), and Lophodytes cucullatus (Hooded Mergansers). We evaluated fi xed-radius plot (FRP) and Reynolds and Goodrum variable-radius plot (VRP) methods for es...

Decomposition of red oak acorns (Quercus spp.; Section Erythrobalanus) could decrease forage biomass and gross energy (GE) available to wintering ducks from acorns. We estimated changes in mass and GE for 3 species of red oak acorns in flooded and non-flooded bottomland hardwood forests in Mississippi during winter 2009–2010. Mass loss of acorns was 8.1% and reduction in GE 0.03 kcal/g after ex...
متن کاملSilvicultural Alternatives in Bottomland Hardwoods and Their Impact on Stand Quality
--Bottomland hardwoods occur on some 35 million acres of forest land in swamps, creek margins, river bottoms, and brown loam bluffs from Virginia to Texas. These hardwood types are very important because the wood has great value and is in demand by forest industries. This article discusses silvicultural alternatives such as site-species relationships, how hardwood timber is used, protection, ti...
متن کاملHypotheses for Common Persimmon Stand Development in Mixed-species Bottomland Hardwood Forests
Common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.) is a shade-tolerant tree species found in southern bottomland hardwood forests. It is a desired species due primarily to its large fruit used by many wildlife species. While it has been observed as a component in natural reproduction, persimmon is rarely found as an overstory species in maturing bottomland hardwood stands. Unfortunately, little informa...

Intensively managed pine (Pinus spp.) forests encompass over 15.8 million hectares in the southeastern United States and provide an important source of wood products and an economic return to landowners. Given the extent of this landscape and the diversity of management goals and stakeholders, understanding how these forests can also be managed for biological diversity is important. Swainson’s ...
