Adjoint “quarks” on coarse anisotropic lattices: Implications for string breaking in full QCD

چکیده
A detailed study is made of four dimensional SU(2) gauge theory with static adjoint “quarks” in the context of string breaking. A tadpole-improved action is used to do simulations on lattices with coarse spatial spacings as, allowing the static potential to be probed at large separations at a dramatically reduced computational cost. Highly anisotropic lattices are used, with fine temporal spacings at, in order to assess the behavior of the time-dependent effective potentials. The lattice spacings are determined from the potentials for quarks in the fundamental representation. Simulations of the Wilson loop in the adjoint representation are done, and the energies of magnetic and electric “gluelumps” (adjoint quark-gluon bound states) are calculated, which set the energy scale for string breaking. Correlators of gauge-fixed static quark propagators, without a connecting string of spatial links, are analyzed. Correlation functions of gluelump pairs are also considered; similar correlators have recently been proposed for observing string breaking in full QCD and other models. A thorough discussion of the relevance of Wilson loops over other operators for studies of string breaking is presented, using the simulation results presented here to support a number of new arguments.

Static Potential and Local Color Fields in Unquenched Three-Dimensional Lattice QCD
String breaking by dynamical quarks in (2+1)-d lattice QCD is demonstrated in this project, by measuring the static potential and the local color-electric field strength between a heavy quark and antiquark pair at large separations. Simulations are done for unquenched SU(2) color with two flavors of staggered quarks. An improved gluon action is used which allows simulations to be done on coarse...
متن کاملString Breaking in Four Dimensional Lattice QCD
Virtual quark pair screening leads to breaking of the string between fundamental representation quarks in QCD. For unquenched four dimensional lattice QCD, this (so far elusive) phenomenon is studied using the recently developed truncated determinant algorithm (TDA). The dynamical configurations were generated on an Athlon 650 MHz PC. Quark eigenmodes up to 420 MeV are included exactly in these...
متن کاملImproved Quark Actions for Lattice Qcd
In the last few years it has become clear that there are a variety of gluon actions that give accurate results on coarse lattices (a = 0.2 − 0.4 fm); see various contributions to Lattice 96. Such actions have been constructed within the Symanzik improvement program, eliminating O(a) errors using tadpole improvement 2 at treeand at one-loop level, as well as within the MCRG (or “perfect action”)...
متن کاملString breaking by dynamical fermions in three-dimensional lattice QCD
The first observation is made of hadronic string breaking due to dynamical fermions in zero temperature lattice QCD. The simulations are done for SU(2) color in three dimensions, with two flavors of staggered fermions. The results have clear implications for the large scale simulations that are being done to search (so far, without success) for string breaking in four-dimensional QCD. In partic...
متن کاملWhen QCD strings can break ∗
Most of the observed properties of the string breaking in lattice gauge models in presence of charged dynamical matter can be simply understood in terms of a topological property of the loop expansion in the underlying string description of confinement. Similar considerations apply also to the breaking of the adjoint string. The naive string picture of quark confinement is very simple: in the c...
