چکیده

The presence of tempora l pauses during list presentation can markedly improve immediate memory for a sequence of verbal items. A series of experim ents analysed this effect using Baddeley ’ s (1986) model of working memory. Experiment 1 showed that the effect of tempora l g rouping on memory for visual sequences was removed by either articulatory suppression or reciting random digits. Experiment 2 indicated that effects of temporal grouping were insensitive to the word length of the items. Experim ent 3 showed that articulatory suppression did not remove the tempora l g roup ing effec t for aud itory lists. Experiment 4 showed that the temporal g rouping effect was insensitive to the phonemic sim ilarity of the items. The effects of concurrent articulation suggest that g rouping influences the phonological loop component of working memory. However, the working memory model is insuf ® ciently well speci ® ed to account for the insensitivity of g rouping effects to word length and phonem ic sim ilarity. The main ® ndings could be simulated by a connectionist model of the phonological loop, which invokes a context tim ing s ignal (Burgess & Hitch, 1992 , in press), This assum ed that pauses during list presentation affect the tim ing signal in a sim ilar way to the pause before list presentation and made some novel predictions.

Effects of rhythm on memory for spoken sequences: A model and tests of its stimulus-driven mechanism.

Immediate memory for spoken sequences depends on their rhythm - different levels of accuracy and patterns of error are seen according to the way in which items are spaced in time. Current models address these phenomena only partially or not at all. We investigate the idea that temporal grouping effects are an emergent property of a general serial ordering mechanism based on a population of osci...

A feature model of immediate memory.

A feature model of immediate memory is presented, and simulations are described. List items are characterized as multiattribute vectors that can be selectively overwritten by subsequent external events and by the ongoing stream of internal activity. Degraded primary memory vectors are compared with intact secondary memory vectors, and retrieval likelihood is computed as the ratio of similaritie...

Spatio-Temporal Structure, Path Characteristics, and Perceptual Grouping in Immediate Serial Spatial Recall

Immediate serial spatial recall measures the ability to retain sequences of locations in short-term memory and is considered the spatial equivalent of digit span. It is tested by requiring participants to reproduce sequences of movements performed by an experimenter or displayed on a monitor. Different organizational factors dramatically affect serial spatial recall but they are often confounde...

Neural mechanisms underlying the grouping effect in short-term memory.

Dividing auditory sequence into groups, or imposing rhythmic, tonal, or spatial structure during presentation, improves recall performance. Several competing computational models have been proposed to account for these effects, but little is known about the neural correlates of grouping and hence the representations that encode grouped sequences. The present study used functional magnetic reson...
