Investigating Cultural Differences in Virtual Software Teams
نویسندگان
چکیده
Software development projects increasingly extend over the boundaries set by a single company, or country. As the available communication media becomes more sophisticated, and more advanced technology costs less, the trends in software development move towards a more “virtual” nature. This evolutionary process allows individuals or even teams from different locations and cultures, with different expectations and goals, to blend in a virtual team of effectively collaborating and coordinating members. This paper focuses on virtual software development teams and how cultural differences between them or their members may affect activities in different stages of the development cycle. It briefly reviews the existing perspectives on virtual teams and their organisation and management. It also discusses the main characteristics that such teams have and clarifies the differences between various definitions available for the “virtual team”. After outlining some of the main benefits and barriers of such teams, it concentrates on justifying that cultural differences are one of the most important issues that should be addressed for these teams to work effectively. Next, existing theories on cultural differences are reviewed. Also, the requirements for modelling cultural difference issues are identified. Finally, it provides evidence for the need of computational support for effectively resolving conflicts, forming teams, dynamically allocating roles, and managing software engineering projects in culturally diverse environments.

The Collaborative Conflict Management Style, and Performance of Global Virtual Teams
The growing utilization of global virtual teams with members of different cultural backgrounds necessitates investigating whether the performance of culturally diverse virtual teams would differ from the performance of culturally homogeneous ones. Conflict management styles have been found to be of crucial importance for the success of virtual teams. This research-in-progress paper advances a m...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Cultural Intelligence as an Antecedent to Virtual Software Development Team Success
Globalization spurred the rise of virtual software development teams. The complexity of managing a virtual team is rooted in the diverse cultural makeup of the team. Research increasingly recognizes that culture has significant implications for information systems. We propose in this study that the success of virtual software development team is influenced by cultural intelligence, a recent con...

International business activities increasingly lead to the formation of multicultural teams that work together as project teams, for a certain time both at a site as well as in virtual teams. Despite the modern conception of many companies that multicultural composite teams are more productive due to various perspectives and work styles, the ignorance and disrespect of these differences in work...
متن کاملSuccess Factors for the Management of Global Virtual Teams for Software Development
The management of globally distributed software teams is complex because of problems of linguistic differences, geographical dispersion, different time zones, and the cultural diversity of the team members; what is particularly common in software development environments. These problems are amplified when a single software development team is composed of highly skilled individuals working in di...
