Frequency-dependent volumetric distribution of somatosensory evoked magnetic fields

چکیده
Event-related desynchronization (ERD) is attenuation in the amplitude of oscillations in specific frequency that occurs in relation to a specific neural activity [1]. The opposite phenomenon, event-related synchronization (ERS), is an increase in the amplitude [2]. A previous MEG study demonstrated that ERD occurs in alpha and beta bands following electrical stimulation of the median nerve or self-paced finger movements in human [3]. However, the changes in brain rhythm in higher frequency bands following somatosensory stimulation have been reported only in the animal brain [4]. Furthermore, the volumetric distribution of those changes has not been demonstrated previously. In the present study, we have developed a novel analysis method, synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) [5], to reveal the frequency-dependent volumetric distribution of somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) on the individual MR images. SAM is one of the statistical spatial filtering methods using an adaptive beamformer, analogous to the technique which obtains the high spatial selectivity from radio antenna arrays [5,6,7].

The second somatosensory area (SlI) has been studied both by electrical evoked potentials24 and magnetoencephalography (MEG)5 Magnetic evoked fields of contralateral primary somatosensory and ipsilateral second somatosensory cortices of 12 normal subjects were recorded in response to median nerve electrical stimulation by means of a single magnetometer. We detected. in addition to the usua...

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and T2*-weighted nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) images were recorded simultaneously during somatosensory stimulation of rat to investigate the relationship between electrical activation of the brain tissue and the signal intensity change in functional NMR imaging. Electrical forepaw stimulation was performed in Wistar rats anesthetized with alpha-chloralo...
متن کاملNeuronal response properties of somatosensory cortex (layer IV) are modulated following experience dependent plasticity in c-fiber depleted rats
Previous studies have shown that the receptive field properties, spontaneous activity and spatio-temporal interactions of low-threshold mechanical somatosensory cells in the barrel cortex are influenced by C-fibers. In this study, we examined the effect of C-fiber depletion on response properties of barrel cortex neurons following experience dependent plasticity. Methods: In this study, exte...
متن کاملFace area representation of primary somatosensory cortex in humans identified by whole-head magnetoencephalography.
The feasibility of precise mapping was investigated noninvasively on the face component in predominantly unilateral primary somatosensory cortices (SI) in six healthy subjects. We recorded somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) from the SI and secondary somatosensory cortices (SII) following the electrical stimulation of six skin sites: the infraorbital foramen, the angle of mouth, the upp...
